You don't have to spend half your weekend driving on the N1 highway to escape Johannesburg. These simple destinations are close enough for a Friday afternoon departure, yet far enough away to feel like a real break.
If the city starts feeling too noisy, there are many places within about a two-hour radius of Johannesburg where the pace of life slows down significantly. Some are perfect for leisurely lunches and long mornings, while others suit hiking, safaris, or water relaxation better.
Below are some options for a short escape from Johannesburg for your next weekend.
Magaliesberg
For classic countryside relaxation, you can hardly go wrong with Magaliesburg. The Magaliesberg mountains stretch out here, featuring a landscape of rocky cliffs, wooded valleys, meadows, and shrubs, creating a scene that makes the town seem very distant, even if it isn't.
