A new development has emerged in the suicide case in Sangrur. Following the death of a low-caste worker, Gulzar Singh, his entire family issued a joint video appeal, leveling serious accusations against the administration.
The family claims that pressure was exerted on Gulzar Singh's son and relatives to conduct his funeral. Previously, the son stated that he was satisfied with the investigation, but now the whole family is openly demanding justice.
Gulzar Singh, who was 47 years old, belonged to a lower caste and lived in the village of Dirba, Sangrur district. According to the family, his death occurred on Monday night after consuming poison. According to the family's version, on September 6, during an event in Dirba, he asked Finance Minister Harpal Chime about drug supplies in the area. In one video recording, Gulzar Singh asks Chime about the availability of drugs and blames the village elder for his death.
The family now accuses the administration of coercing them into holding the funeral without allowing them to perform rites of their own choosing. Relatives stated that they will not hold the flower ceremony or the worship ritual until they receive justice. They also called on residents of all of Punjab to support them.
In this matter, Congress politician Rahul Gandhi criticized the Punjab state government from the Aam Aadmi party. He demanded that Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann immediately call for the resignation of Finance Minister Harpal Chime and conduct an impartial investigation. Gandhi stated that people who question the government are being intimidated and persecuted. He also mentioned Mohanjit Singh, a young man from Sangrur, who was harassed for participating in protests against the Chief Minister.
Currently, cases have been filed against five individuals in this matter on charges of abetting suicide and under the law preventing caste and tribal crimes.
