The tournament's main player, Alexander Zverev, advanced to the US Open semi-finals on Wednesday, securing a convincing victory over Dutchman Bocke van de Zandschulp in straight sets. This win brings Zverev closer to winning his second Grand Slam title.
World number two, Zverev, who first won a Grand Slam title at Roland Garros in June, looked flawless, defeating Van de Zandschulp with a score of 6-2, 7-5, 6-1 on Arthur Ashe Court.
The 29-year-old German athlete, who was previously a finalist at the US Open in 2020, will face unseeded Russian Karen Khachanov in the semi-finals on Friday. After a confident performance against the 70th-ranked Van de Zandschulp, who was broken twice in the first set, Zverev enters the quarter-finals with great confidence.
The second set showed some fight from the Dutchman, who managed to create a threat when gaining a point advantage at 5-4, leading over Zverev. However, the Dutchman made an error returning the serve, allowing Zverev to level the score at 5-5. In the next game, Zverev managed to break his opponent's serve, taking a 6-5 lead when Van de Zandschulp hit the ball wide with an inaccurate forehand.
Zverev held serve to win the set and gain a 2-0 advantage, thus interrupting Van de Zandschulp's brief resistance. The 30-year-old player quickly started losing, conceding a double break and falling behind 4-1. He was then broken again in the seventh game, allowing Zverev to close out the match.
In other US Open quarter-final matches, unseeded Russian Karen Khachanov advanced to the semi-finals after 28th seed from Belgium, Alexander Blockx, had to withdraw due to injury, trailing 6-2, 7-5, 3-2.
In the women's tournament, fourth seed Coco Gauff managed to recover after losing the first set to defeat Russian Mirra Andreeva with a score of 2-6, 7-6 (9/7), 6-2. Second seed Elena Rybakina also successfully returned to the game, beating Chinese Zheng Qinwen with a score of 3-6, 6-1, 6-4.
