Around forty protesters gathered near a four-star hotel, mistakenly believing that a group of people seeking asylum was staying there. Many of the protesters concealed their faces using masks and other means.
However, the truth soon emerged: the group the protesters mistook for refugees was actually the Pakistani U-19 youth team. This team, led by Farhan Yusuf, is part of a visit to England and is staying at the Marriott Hotel in Portsmouth.
The incident took place on Tuesday, September 8th. The protesters saw players near the hotel and assumed they were one of the groups of refugees who had recently arrived in England by boat. As the situation began to escalate, a local council member, George Madgwick, was called to the scene. After speaking with the hotel manager, he learned that the guests were members of the Pakistani youth cricket team.

George Madgwick spoke with the team's coach and confirmed that the players were part of a cricket team. He then provided the full information to the people outside. Madgwick approached the protesters and told them, 'You are mistaken, this is a cricket club.' After this, the crowd left within a few minutes. He described the entire incident as extremely regrettable, noting that the misunderstanding arose from existing tensions among local residents.
A significant factor in the incident was the bus company that transported the players to the hotel. The bus used by the Pakistani U-19 team was also used by the same company to transport refugees arriving in Portsmouth. According to Madgwick, local residents were already on edge due to this issue. Therefore, upon seeing the Pakistani team arriving on the bus of this company, some people, lacking complete information, assumed they were refugees. He noted that while people's concerns can be understood in the current climate, this case does not help create a good image for Portsmouth.
This incident occurred during a period of heightened tension in Portsmouth regarding refugees. Recently, demonstrations took place in the city concerning people arriving from France into England on small boats. Hundreds of people took to the streets on Sunday evening, leading to clashes with the police. Police are investigating possible attacks and property damage. The next day, masked protesters also blocked a road near the port in Dover.
George Madgwick's role in this matter was also noteworthy. When local residents informed him about the alleged stay of migrants at the hotel, he urged people not to approach the hotel from outside via his Facebook page. Later, upon learning the real situation, he explained to the protesters that the Pakistani U-19 youth team was staying at the hotel. Madgwick emphasized that this incident is a consequence of an atmosphere where local residents are very concerned about these issues.
The Pakistani U-19 team is currently on tour in England. They recently played a four-day match against another team, which the Pakistani side lost by only 10 runs. Now both teams are participating in a four-match youth ODI series. Meanwhile, the senior Pakistan team is also in England and is playing the third and final match of a three-match series against England in Edgbaston.
