Fortnite demonstrates the ability to turn any franchise into a popular phenomenon through crossovers

Fortnite has demonstrated how any franchise can become a phenomenon. Within the standard game map, which has been active since August 20th, players can encounter an Italian plumber, a blue hedgehog, and the protagonist of a 2016 Japanese RPG fighting each other.

Although this is not a mod like those seen in GTA, the Override season introduced Sonic, Mega Man, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, Joker from Persona 5, and Sora from Kingdom Hearts, who share space with classic characters such as Master Chief, Geralt, and Lara Croft.

The game has ceased to be just a 'battle royale'; in recent years, it has transformed into a showcase displaying Marvel heroes, the Star Wars universe's wars, and live performances by artists like Travis Scott and Metallica.

The Override season uses the same formula, proving that this crossover mechanism works with any franchise, even competitors of Fortnite itself. Epic Games named this season 'Gaming Legends' and generously used references. In addition to the previously mentioned names, the map includes references to Tetris and Pac-Man, as well as a Roblox skin taken from the game 99 Nights, aligning with other combat crossovers such as Mortal Kombat (Scorpion, Raiden, Kitana) that Epic has already offered in the store.

Each character possesses unique accessories: among them is a backpack system that provides unique abilities depending on the character, such as speed when using Sonic, flight with Tails, or a machine gun on the arm when playing as Mega Man.

The map was altered to accommodate these references. The classic location Green Hill Zone became a point of interest due to speed loops; a maze inspired by Pac-Man appeared; and Tetris blocks fall as an environmental element in certain areas. The battle pass confirmed the presence of eight skins, including Sonic and Tetris; Mega Man is currently absent from the pass but available in the store in rotation with other permanent characters from different franchises. To obtain all content, users will have to gradually spend V-Bucks.

The Override season did not appear suddenly. It is merely the latest chapter in a strategy that Epic has been testing since 2018, when Thanos appeared in Season 4 and has since become the benchmark for all Epic collaborations. During this period, Marvel alone has provided over 45 Fortnite collaborations, ranging from individual heroes to entire comic book-based military events.

This pattern has repeated with other franchises. Star Wars entered the game with Chapter 2, bringing Rey, Finn, and later Darth Vader and Ahsoka Tano. The world of anime has provided over ten crossovers, including Naruto, Dragon Ball, and Jujutsu Kaisen. Naruto, in particular, is still considered one of the most discussed anime crossovers in Fortnite, which helped pave the way for other Japanese franchises in the game. The musical component features over 25 partnerships, almost always accompanied by full concerts directly within the game.

Each of these phases followed the same logic: integrating an entire external culture into Fortnite's linguistic system. The culmination of this strategy occurred in May 2025 during the 'Galactic Battle' season dedicated to Star Wars. Epic did not limit itself to placing lightsabers and ships on the map; it created an island called Star Wars Watch Party and used it to stream the first two episodes of the series Star Wars: Tales of the Underworld exclusively for 48 hours, even before its premiere on Disney+.

This innovative step was well received by the community: it is a way to organically introduce a younger audience to a franchise with an almost 50-year history. Disney invested $1.5 billion in Fortnite, marking the company's largest investment in the gaming sector to date. The game has accumulated thousands of collaboration items over the years, including fashion brands, superheroes, and film franchises.

The effect is felt outside the game as well. When Epic announced a Karol G concert in Fortnite, the song 'Si Antes Te Hubiera Conocido' rose to the 5th spot on Spotify's charts in August 2024, and this growth was caused solely by the announcement, even before the show took place. The most cited case is the Travis Scott concert in 2020: the peak concurrent viewer count reached 12.3 million, and the total number of unique players for the event reached 27.7 million, plus about $20 million in merchandise sales, exceeding his usual income from an entire physical tour.

The last instance before Override was the Metallica concert in June 2024. The entire band was represented in the game digitally, performing six songs in Fortnite Festival, complete with thematic skins and a racing track in Creative mode. This was a Fortnite show present simultaneously in three modes: playable cosmetic items in Battle Royale, a special music experience in Festival, and a racing track in Creative. Thus, the same structure of distributing the crossover across the battle pass, store, and special modes that Override is currently using with playable characters was tested months earlier with the rock band.

In fact, the gaming community is divided regarding this excess of references. Some believe that battle royale has become too information-dense and should focus on building, shooting, and survival, rather than decoration and identifying who is who among dozens of crossovers. Another segment loves exactly this: the ability to assemble their perfect team by combining Sonic, Geralt, and Johnny Silverhand. Ultimately, both viewpoints are valid. What matters is that when something new is made with quality and heart, whether it is a crossover, a new mode, or a new mechanic, it is always welcomed by those who truly live the gaming culture.
