In large metropolises such as Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore, people often come from far away for work. However, these smart cities face a shortage of living space, and instead of land, people are increasingly purchasing and renting apartments.
Even if the area is limited, owning a home in big cities is a significant achievement. Nevertheless, due to lack of space, residents constantly buy new cabinets and furniture for storage. This new furniture further takes up space, reducing movement areas, and rooms filled with furniture can look unattractive.
Storing things in small apartments and rented accommodation becomes a serious problem that causes many difficulties for people. However, by using some ingenuity and effectively utilizing existing space, you can increase storage volume without significant expense. These methods will not only help organize the home but also allow you to fit more things into a limited space.
Create under-bed storage. The space under the bed is often unused and can be used to store a large number of items. The advantage is that the items remain out of sight and do not attract attention. Here you can store rarely used clothes, sheets, blankets, and bags. To protect items from dust and moisture, they should be placed in boxes or special storage bags.
Use over-the-door organizers. The space behind a door in a room can also be useful. You can install a hanging organizer behind the entrance door to store slippers, bags, scarves, belts, or small cosmetic items.
Use walls intelligently. Instead of piling things on the floor, install shelves or floating racks on the walls. On them, you can place books, small plants, decorative items, and daily use items. This frees up the floor and makes the room look visually larger.
Turn the headboard into storage. Although some headboards already have built-in drawers, if yours does not, there is no need to change it. Small shelves or organizers with pockets can be used around the headboard for convenient placement of books, glasses, mobile phone chargers, and other small items.
Use hooks inside kitchen cabinets. You don't need to buy separate cabinets for glassware; you can simply attach small hooks inside existing kitchen cabinets to hang mugs, cups, or kitchen utensils. Similarly, small shelves can be installed on the inside of a cabinet door to store spices or cleaning supplies. These shelves can also store vegetables, such as potatoes and onions, which do not require refrigeration.
Fold clothes neatly. If there is little space in the closet, instead of stacking things on top of each other, use the vertical folding method. This allows you to fit more clothes in a drawer and easily retrieve the desired item when needed without disturbing the entire order. This approach makes the contents of the closet neat and aesthetic.
Do not leave empty space under sofas and tables. In rented accommodation, space is often limited, so baskets and boxes can be placed under a sofa, coffee table, or side table. In them, you can store toys, magazines, remote controls, spare pillows, or other daily necessities. This helps avoid clutter and allows you to easily find what you need.
Place shelves in corners. Besides walls, you can use the corners of the room. Instead of buying new large furniture for an empty corner, install a narrow vertical shelf. It takes up little space but provides storage all the way to the top. Using vertical space is very advantageous in small homes because it frees up floor space.
Find multi-functional items. If you plan to buy furniture for a new home, pay attention to items that have multiple functions. For example, an ottoman can be used as a seat and simultaneously as storage. You can also organize empty boxes and use them as containers for storage in the closet or kitchen, and use a sofa bed instead of a regular bed.
Assign a permanent place for every item. In a small house, the most important thing is that every item has its own place. Daily used items should be placed in easily accessible locations, while rarely used items should be placed on high shelves, under the bed, or in special storage drawers. This prevents items from being scattered around the house and teaches children tidiness, making the living space impeccably clean.
