Touching images of a group of children gathered outdoors in the city of Gaza, watching the Disney movie 'The Lion King,' have generated great emotion on social media.
This moment was made possible by the mobile project Little Wings Cinema, an initiative created to provide Palestinian children with a space for recreation amidst the severe conditions and widespread destruction caused by the conflict between Israel and Hamas.
The photographs, taken by award-winning photojournalist Omar Ashtawy (Getty Images), were recorded in the Sheikh Radwan area, north of Gaza City, last week.
The photos show a group of children watching the Disney movie projected onto a screen, surrounded by damaged buildings, debris, and displaced persons' tents – a moment of normalcy in a devastated environment.
One of these images was shared by the United Nations mission in Palestine on the X platform and quickly went viral.
Most residents of Gaza have been forced to displace due to the war initiated by Israel after the October 7, 2023 attacks perpetrated by the extremist Palestinian movement Hamas, which resulted in the death of more than 1,200 people in Israeli territory.
According to data from the Gaza government, under Hamas administration, considered reliable by the United Nations, more than 73 thousand people have been killed by the Israeli army in Gaza over the last three years.
