According to MyBroadband, South African citizens attempting to apply for or renew their passports through the eHomeAffairs system are reporting serious issues with finding available time slots in participating bank branches. The shortage has become so significant that some applicants believe it would be simpler to go directly to the Home Affairs office.
The banking service was introduced to increase the convenience of applications, allowing eligible South African citizens to complete most of the procedure online before visiting a participating bank for biometric data collection. Currently, Home Affairs allows citizens to fill out applications, make payments, and schedule visits through its eHomeAffairs platform. However, when demand is high and available slots are limited, finding a suitable appointment becomes difficult.
Although bank branches may offer a more convenient alternative to traditional Home Affairs offices, it is not necessary to book an appointment at the bank to apply for a passport. Those planning international travel are advised to allow sufficient time for the passport application process in advance, rather than relying on finding a last-minute appointment at a bank.
