One of the most famous episodes involved the use of a bat as a weapon, leading to the renowned clash between Australian fast bowler Dennis Lillee and Pakistan captain Zaved Miandad, which entered cricket history as one of the most discussed incidents.
The seriousness of this event is underscored by 'Wisden Cricketers' Almanack' itself, which considers it one of the ugliest scenes in the history of Test matches.
'Wisden' recognition is considered the highest honor in the world of cricket. This famous yellow book has documented all aspects of cricket for decades. While praise for play is an acknowledgment of merit, inclusion of any incident in the pages of 'Wisden' with criticism carries significant weight.
The events that took place on the field in Perth in 1981 fall into this latter category.
In October 1981, the Pakistan team arrived in Australia to participate in a series of three Test matches, with Zaved Miandad serving as captain. It was his first overseas tour as captain, but circumstances proved unfavorable. A tense atmosphere prevailed within the team: many senior players expressed dissatisfaction with Miandad's appointment as captain. 'Wisden' noted that the team lacked full support for Miandad during that period.
The first match took place in Perth, and there, cricket began to show its dangerous side.
In the Test match in Perth, held from November 13 to 17, 1981, Australia scored 180 runs in the first innings. Pakistan's reply was extremely weak: the entire team was dismissed for only 62 runs, with eight wickets falling in just 26 runs. Two bowlers were responsible for this collapse—Dennis Lillee and Terry Alderman. Lillee broke Pakistan's back by taking 5 wickets, while Alderman took four.
Australia declared the second innings at 424/8, setting a colossal target of 543 runs for Pakistan. The target was difficult, but Zaved Miandad was on the field.
Pakistan lost two wickets, scoring 27 runs. Then Miandad came out to bat alongside Mansoor Akhtar, attempting to stabilize the game. Both players faced the Australian bowlers and mounting pressure.
However, about 40 minutes before tea, the situation changed abruptly. Dennis Lillee appealed for LBW against Miandad, which the umpire dismissed. On the next ball, Miandad moved forward to take an easy single when Lillee collided with him. According to eyewitnesses, Lillee's appearance in the path of the running player seemed deliberate. Miandad somehow pushed him aside and completed the run. Seemingly, the incident could have ended there.
But Lillee was not going to let it go.
When Miandad reached the non-striker's end, Lillee approached him and struck his thigh guard, indicating that the ball had hit precisely there. After this, the temperature on the field suddenly rose. Miandad became enraged. He picked up his bat and ran towards Lillee, swinging it like a sword.
For a few seconds, the field transformed from a sports ground into an arena of direct confrontation between two athletes. Australian team captain Greg Chappell intervened and separated them. However, the situation did not fully calm down. Lillee stepped back slightly, then turned again and headed towards Miandad. Umpires Tony Croft and Greg Chappell had to intervene again to stop the conflict. Ultimately, the over was completed, and the confrontation ceased, but this moment forever entered cricket history.
Ultimately, Australia won against Pakistan by 286 runs. Nevertheless, the most memorable moment of the match was not the statistics, but the conflict itself, which caused discomfort in the cricket community.
Lillee was fined 200 Australian dollars, a sum later reduced to $120. Furthermore, he received a two-match suspension. Although he played in the remaining two Tests of the series, he was excluded from two less significant Benson & Hedges World Cup one-day matches as punishment. It was this case that 'Wisden' noted as one of the disgraceful episodes in cricket history.
