Tourist flow in Ladakh sharply increased in 2026 due to festivals and infrastructure development

Ladakh recorded a significant increase in the number of arriving tourists in 2026. In the first eight months of this year, 405,085 people visited, exceeding the figure of 335,872 tourists registered for the entire year of 2025.

A government representative stated that over the first eight months of 2026, the total tourist flow increased by 20.6% compared to the total number of tourists in 2025.

August 2026 was the month with the highest number of foreign visitors this year, with 10,075 foreigners arriving. This is significantly higher than the 8,148 foreign tourists who visited Ladakh in August 2025.

The growth was observed among both domestic and international tourists. In the first eight months of 2026, 371,739 domestic tourists and 33,346 international tourists arrived in Ladakh, whereas in the same period of 2025, 244,308 domestic and 25,082 international tourists were recorded.

New attractions appeared in Ladakh in August thanks to the holding of major festivals such as the Changtan Nomads Festival, the first Black Crane Festival, the Suru Summer Festival, and the Ladakh Book Festival. These events attracted a large number of visitors.

The inaugural Black Crane Festival alone gathered over 10,000 participants from India and other countries. These festivals showcase the unique culture of the Ladakh region, nomadic traditions, wildlife, and natural heritage.

The tourism calendar of Ladakh remains active in September, with major events planned such as the Ladakh Motorcycle Week, the Ladakh Festival, the Zanskar Festival, and the Ladakh Marathon. The marathon is particularly attracting attention, gathering runners from across the country and beyond; many participants travel to Ladakh with their families, which brings wide benefits to hotels, guesthouses, restaurants, transport operators, guides, local businesses, and other tourism-related services.

Ladakh Chief of Staff Vinay Kumar Saxena attributed this growth to the continuous efforts of the central government to develop infrastructure in Ladakh, as well as the Prime Minister Narendra Modi's appeal to citizens to visit places in India and support domestic tourism.

Saxena noted that the fact that the total tourist flow in the first eight months of the current year has exceeded that of all of 2025 is a very encouraging sign. However, he emphasized that the focus is not only on increasing the number of tourists but also on creating a sustainable, responsible, and year-round tourism economy that benefits the local population.

He added that festivals, sporting events, and cultural programs help extend the tourist season beyond the traditional summer, attracting visitors to Ladakh during the off-season and low season.

New West Bengal tourism ad campaign draws criticism for featuring global landmarks

The state government released a new advertising campaign to promote West Bengal on the global tourism map, but after its publication, the video faced sharp criticism from internet users. Critics argue that the advertisement focuses on foreign tourist attractions rather than the beauty of Bengal itself.

The video features famous places such as the Eiffel Tower from France, St. Basil's Cathedral from Russia, the pyramids from Egypt, and Christ the Redeemer from Rio de Janeiro, while the Howrah Bridge only briefly appears. On social media, users question where Bengal itself is represented in this advertisement.

Chief Minister Shubhendu Adhikari presented the new logo and brand identity for West Bengal tourism at the Dhano Dhanya Auditorium on Friday. Simultaneously, the government announced the allocation of 500 crore rupees for improving tourism infrastructure. At the event, the head of the government stated: 'The tourism infrastructure of our state has been destroyed. Tourists travel from our areas of Darjeeling and Kalimpong to Sikkim. We aim to change this.'

The new slogan for Bengal tourism is 'West Bengal: Where India feels different.' This new branding initiative is seen as a step by the BJP party, differing from the 'Biswa Bangla' concept launched during Mamata Banerjee's rule. The main controversy arose due to the promotional video. The advertisement begins with beautiful views of the Howrah Bridge, after which Bengal almost disappears, and the video starts showing various corners of the world.

The video features deserts and pyramids, as well as famous buildings and skyscrapers from different countries. Meanwhile, local attractions such as the Victoria Memorial, the famous terracotta temples of Bishnupur, and the amusement park in Darjeeling did not receive adequate attention. This causes dissatisfaction because West Bengal possesses significant tourism diversity: mangrove forests and the Sundarbans coast are in the south, and mountainous regions, including Darjeeling and Kalimpong, are in the north.

Tamsar MLA Derek O'Brien criticized it, writing: 'Even the word 'garbage' is too mild a description for this message.' Former Governor of Tripura and Meghalaya, Tagat Rai, called the video 'stupid' and 'amateurish,' questioning the inclusion of scenes from Moscow, Egypt, and Rio de Janeiro in a video about West Bengal, and demanded the immediate withdrawal of the advertisement.

Political analyst Mayuk Ranjan Ghosh sarcastically noted that the creative director deserves an 'Oscar.' He questioned why one should free-advertise the Eiffel Tower and St. Petersburg when West Bengal has everything: from mountains to the sea, from forests to cities. There is also a discussion on social media regarding the new slogan, where some users compare it to Kerala's famous slogan 'God's Own Country' and Rajasthan's 'Padharo Mhare Des.'
