Windows 11 users in various parts of the world have reported that Microsoft has started displaying full-screen advertisements, which contradicts the expectation of a clean and uninterrupted desktop experience.
These advertisements are broadcast through the Bing Wallpaper application and promote movie collections, such as the Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts franchises. The commercial action is linked to the official Microsoft utility, which automatically changes the computer's background, presenting high-resolution images of landscapes and nature provided by the company's search engine.
Subtly, the official program download page contains a small print notice just below the installation button, warning users that they may receive 'notifications containing promotional offers,' including the large banner that covers the entire desktop environment. This ad displays artwork from the collection with the inscription 'Available now' and a button encouraging web searches to make a purchase.
The introduction of this feature caused indignation among users due to the invasion of personal space and the advertised product. In online communities, such as Reddit, consumers expressed frustration with the aggressive marketing in the operating system, labeling the initiative as a 'trivialization of Windows.'
The situation gained additional complexity due to controversies involving the franchise creator, J.K. Rowling, who is frequently associated with transphobic remarks. In an official Microsoft Learn forum, a user raised questions about why Microsoft profits from 'a brand facing internet boycotts.'
In the same discussion, it was suggested that the technology company could compensate for the mistake by donating the revenue obtained from the promotional campaign to non-profit organizations dedicated to supporting the transgender population. To date, Microsoft has not issued an official statement regarding the display of the advertisement or the criticism received from the community.
