Merat, which gained fame for manufacturing cricket bats, is now known not only as a city specializing in bat production. The sports industry in this city has significantly expanded in recent years. If previously the sports goods manufacturing business started with four or five enterprises, it has now reached the level of about 5-7 thousand small and large production units. Products manufactured in Merat are supplied not only within the country but also to many foreign countries, with the annual export of sports equipment from the region estimated at approximately 975 crore rupees.

The history of Merat's sports industry spans about nine decades. According to data from the Department of Industries, some families began producing footballs between 1935 and 1940. Subsequently, in 1947, people displaced from cities such as Sialkot and Peshawar during the partition of the country continued to develop this business. Through perseverance, craftsmanship, and new experiments, Merat has become a major center for sports equipment manufacturing.

In its initial phase, Merat's sports industry was primarily focused on cricket bats and footballs. Over time, the scope of activity has continuously expanded. Today, it manufactures not only cricket bats, cricket balls, and sticks, but also hockey sticks, footballs, volleyballs, table tennis sets, tennis rackets and balls. Additionally, nets for games, athletic equipment, protective accessories, sports equipment bags, sportswear, indoor game items, boxing gloves, fitness equipment, and trainers, as well as shuttlecocks, are produced.

According to the Department of Industries, there is demand for sports goods produced in Merat abroad. Products from this region are sent to countries such as Australia, South Africa, England, America, West Indies, New Zealand, Zimbabwe, Bangladesh, Germany, France, Sri Lanka, and Russia, allowing Merat's sports industry to move beyond the local market and secure its niche on the international stage.

Charandjit Bhatia, owner of Buchi Sports, notes that the ODOP program has simplified the path for small entrepreneurs to expand their businesses. He emphasizes that previously there were only four or five sports enterprises operating in Merat, whereas now, including small and large ones, there are about 5-7 thousand units. This demonstrates the rapid growth of the industry over the past years.

According to Charandjit Bhatia, the ODOP program made it easier for small entrepreneurs to obtain loans. Receiving a subsidy of up to 50% for installing new equipment has also helped increase production capacity. He himself utilized the government program and recently installed machines for producing fiber-plastic cricket bats, indicating the business's shift towards products made using new technologies alongside traditional equipment.

Aditya Mahajan, owner of BDM Sports, asserts that the central and state government's 'Khelo India' policy has given new significance to Merat's sports industry. Previously, Merat was mainly known for cricket bats, but now large-scale production of badminton, tennis, table tennis equipment, carrom sets, and other sports goods is also taking place here.

Aditya Mahajan also states that the state's preferential interest-free loan program is a great support for small businesses. It allows entrepreneurs to expand their businesses and implement new technologies. Thanks to the support of government programs, small manufacturers are moving forward in increasing their production capacity.

The influence of Merat's sports industry is not limited to factories. Sports equipment production involves many jobs such as packaging, polishing, stitching, fitting, and kit preparation. Furthermore, small entrepreneurs and workers involved in supply and transportation are employed in this sector. With the expansion of the industry, the number of jobs in these sectors has also increased.

Emphasis is also placed on linking local products to the market and branding through the ODOP program. This has benefited Merat's sports goods, and now their recognition is not limited to the local market but reaches international buyers and major brands.

Merat's entrepreneurs are now combining traditional skills with the use of modern machinery and technology. This has led to an improvement in both quality and production potential. Entrepreneurs believe that if they continue to focus on design, quality, modern technology, branding, and exports, Merat can increase its share in the global sports goods market.

Today, Merat is not just a city producing cricket bats; it is shaping its identity as a multifaceted sports hub. The cooperation of government programs, the diligence of entrepreneurs, and the skill of local artisans contribute to the development of this industry. Sports goods produced in Merat reach sports fields in the country as well as stadiums and training centers abroad. This is why this business, which started almost nine decades ago, has today entered the international market, achieving an annual export of approximately 975 crore rupees.

The excitement surrounding the upcoming visit of the Indian team to New Zealand reached such a scale that even the host side's management found it difficult to predict. Ticket sales for India's 12-match multi-format tour set a record in just the first 48 hours. During the preliminary sale in the country, known as the 'Cricket Nation,' 26,000 tickets were sold in just two days.

This tour, which begins in October, has entered the history of New Zealand cricket as one of the most sought-after from the start. As soon as the preliminary sale began on Monday, fans started actively purchasing tickets, with particular enthusiasm observed for India's white-ball matches.

The highest demand for tickets is seen at the famous Eden Park in Auckland, where white-ball matches are held. Furthermore, strong interest in tickets is also evident in Christchurch and Wellington.

Hagley Oval stadium in Christchurch, with a capacity of about 9,000 spectators, may soon be completely full for the first two T20 International matches between India and New Zealand, scheduled for October 22 and 24. This same stadium will also host the second and final match of the series—a Test match, which will take place from November 27 to December 1.

The ticket sales situation is also intense in Wellington. The third T20 International match and the second ODI match will be held there, and the first Test of the series at the historic Basin Reserve will begin on November 19. Ticket sales for these games were also very fast in the initial stages.

Glenn Ritchie, Marketing and Commercial Director of New Zealand Cricket, noted that fans took the call for early ticket purchase seriously. He stated: 'We asked fans from the beginning to prepare in advance so they wouldn't miss the chance to buy a ticket. The record sales in the first two days show that many listened to our words.'

Ritchie emphasized that the matches against India represent a special opportunity for New Zealand fans. According to him, fans will be able to enjoy a magnificent atmosphere during the games against India and see some of the world's greatest players up close.

New Zealand cricket has kept ticket prices for this series at the level of last season. Tickets are available using the access code 'Cricket Nation' for less than 30 New Zealand dollars, and fans participating in the preliminary sale receive a 15 percent discount.

However, general public sales have not yet started. General sales will begin on September 7, meaning 26,000 tickets were already sold before this date. This clearly shows that the excitement surrounding India's visit to New Zealand is not limited to the fields. Although there are about two months until the start of the series, the fight for spots in the stadiums has begun now. If the current pace continues, fans will have to wait a long time to get tickets for some matches.

Cricket will resume in Japan, where the 2026 Asian Games are set to take place in a month. Major Asian teams, including India and Pakistan, are preparing for the tournament, but concerns have arisen regarding the condition of the field, changing rooms, and athletes' accommodation before the start of the competition.

According to reports, the stadium where cricket matches will be held was previously used for baseball. Although the pitch was recently prepared for cricket, very few matches have been played on the hybrid pitch. Furthermore, hotel conditions have caused worry: some rooms are so small that players do not have enough space to stand if they unpack their sports bags.

The cricket matches within the Asian Games will take place in Nishin city, located near Nagoya, Japan, in about three weeks. Many renowned athletes from Asia will gather there. The men's Indian team, led by Shreyas Iyer, includes players such as Jasprit Bumrah and Vaibhav Suryavanshi. The women's Indian team, under Harmanpreet Kaur, will also participate in the tournament. The opening ceremony of the Asian Games is scheduled for September 19, and the cricket matches will begin on September 17. Nevertheless, leading cricket teams have already raised questions about the quality of the provided facilities before the events commence.

According to the Indian Express, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) first raised these issues at the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) meeting about two weeks ago. Following discussions among ACC members, including India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Afghanistan, it was decided that the ACC would send representatives to assess the ground and athlete accommodation conditions.

One source reported that the field is at an initial level from a cricket perspective, and there are doubts about the quality of the pitch. The field was recently renovated, and apart from the May tournament, not many matches have been held there. Concern was also expressed regarding the lack of quality changing rooms.

The Asian Games cricket matches will be held at Kōrogi Sports Park. This venue was originally built for baseball and was later adapted for cricket. The foundation for a baseball pitcher is still present on the field. This structure was prepared for cricket in March of this year. Temporary stands, capable of accommodating around 2000 spectators, are installed on the field. The hybrid pitch has a scoreboard, most of which consists of natural grass, but the surface also includes polyethylene fiber.

In May, a qualifying tournament for the ICC Men's T20 World Cup East Asia Pacific Qualifier was held on this field. At that time, Edem Beers, Asian Games Operations Manager at Kōrogi Sports Park, told AFP that the pitch was expected to have high bounce. Additionally, September in Japan often sees a typhoon season, which could pose an additional challenge.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) also contacted the organizers. After receiving feedback at the ACC meeting, the BCCI reached out to the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and the Asian Games Organizing Committee. An IOA official noted that they have no role in the technical aspects of the sport and advised the BCCI to contact the organizing committee directly. Reports indicate that questions were sent to the Asian Games organizers via email, but no response has been received from them.

A second major issue raised by the cricket boards relates to player accommodation. Athletes will be housed in Nagoya, approximately 20 kilometers from the cricket ground. Unlike previous Asian Games, this Ichi-Nagoya format will not feature a traditional athletes' village. Instead, about 15,000 participants will be accommodated in three types of lodging: luxury cruise liners, game villas, and hotels. According to the Olympic Council of Asia, badminton, cricket, football, and softball players will stay in Nagoya hotels.

'No room to stand after unpacking luggage'

One official expressed concern over the size of the hotel rooms. He stated that the rooms are considered too small to accommodate two players along with their sports bags and other luggage. The official emphasized that this is a real problem: if a player unpacks their suitcase, there will not be enough space in the room to stand. Efforts are currently underway to resolve this issue.

Indian teams may travel to Nagoya on September 14 or 15. The women's cricket tournament begins on September 17, and the Indian women's team, led by Harmanpreet Kaur, will start its campaign against the host Japan. The Indian men's team will play its match on September 28, giving the team time to adapt to Japanese conditions.
