Dubai is known for turning futuristic ideas into reality, including autonomous transport and some of the world's most ambitious architectural projects. Now, the emirate is applying an innovative approach to shopping center parking.
The latest plans for Dubai Square Mall demonstrate Dubai's drive to push the boundaries of what is possible: this future mall will be the first major venue globally equipped with an air-conditioned parking lot.
Mohammed Ali Alabbar, founder of Emaar, stated that 'the parking lot will have full interior finishing and is currently under construction.'
This concept could significantly enhance the visitor experience, especially during the hot summer months in the UAE, when exiting a parked car can be an unpleasant moment of the day.
In high temperatures, walking through a large parking area or returning to a sun-baked car becomes a challenging task. An air-conditioned parking facility can make this part of shopping much more comfortable.
Emaar Properties launched the Dubai Square project in May on the Dubai Creek Harbour site, combining residential and retail offerings within one complex. Dubai Square Mall is expected to open in three years.
This developing mall is planned to be three times larger than Downtown Dubai, with an estimated value of 180 billion dirhams. It is also intended to become one of the region's largest entertainment and retail destinations.
Dubai Square will join Emaar Properties' existing portfolio of malls across the emirate, which includes some of Dubai's most famous shopping destinations.
The developer is the creator of The Dubai Mall, its flagship property and one of the world's largest shopping centers, as well as Dubai Hills Mall, Dubai Marina Mall, Souk Al Bahar, and The Ranches Souk.
The Dubai Mall features over 1300 stores and more than 200 dining establishments, along with major attractions such as an ice rink, aquarium, and KidZania. Expansion is also planned to add 240 new luxury stores.
Meanwhile, Dubai Hills Mall includes over 650 stores, a hypermarket, a cinema, and four leisure and entertainment zones. Dubai Marina Mall offers 140 stores and 21 restaurants, while Souk Al Bahar provides a more traditional, Arabesque-style shopping and dining experience near Downtown Dubai. The Ranches Souk serves residents of Arabian Ranches II, offering shops, cafes, and leisure areas.
The futuristic features of Dubai Square are not limited to just the parking. According to Alabbar, the mall will cater to the growing electric vehicle market by providing special amenities, highlighting the focus on modern and sustainable infrastructure.
It is also planned that the mall will function as a transit destination, reflecting Dubai's commitment to 'green' and smart infrastructure. It will utilize artificial intelligence to provide shoppers with more convenient services and solutions.
Air-conditioned parking is another addition to the growing list of Dubai projects positioned as global novelties.
In May, it was reported that construction of the highly anticipated 'Gold Street' in Dubai is progressing steadily; this unique development is expected to open in the fourth quarter of 2026.
Rashid Al Harmoudi, Senior Commercial Director at Ithra Dubai, previously told Khaleej Times that the project will offer visitors an unparalleled experience. He noted: 'It will be a unique global landmark. Visitors will feel as if they are walking on 'gold',' adding that more detailed information will be available closer to the launch.
Construction continues according to plan, with the street opening slated for the fourth quarter of 2026. Dubai, known as the 'City of Gold,' is already an important destination for gold buyers and traders. The upcoming Gold Street should add another attractive point for tourists and visitors interested in the emirate's thriving gold market.
