In the heart of the Ulin Mountain National Nature Reserve in Chende, Hebei, the Aranya Wuling Mountain resort settlement is located. Life here unfolds amidst mountain springs, where layers of vegetation and streams of clean water create a natural barrier, providing the area with a calm and isolated atmosphere, far from urban noise.
Shan Canteen is a public building designed for daily meals and social recreation. It is situated on a grassy slope next to a stream. The site has higher relief in the north and lower in the south, with views of the water from the west and a landscape garden from the east. The building itself is designed low to the ground, and its dark gray metal roof softly reflects the sky, blending unobtrusively into the surrounding environment.
The roof is executed in a hip-and-gable style, giving the building a clean silhouette from any angle. Deep eaves run continuously around the perimeter, forming an engawa—a semi-open space that serves as a link between the interior and exterior. Here, visitors can pause, enjoy the view, feel the fresh breeze, and hear the murmur of the stream.
Inside the canteen, narrow horizontal windows bring the external landscape indoors, transforming the natural backdrop into a decoration for meals. Sloping eaves protect against the summer sun while directing the gaze toward the water mirrors. The dining area is designed for 108 seats. Between it and the food court counters is a light opening lined with washi paper, which filters the sunlight, transforming it into soft, diffused lighting, creating a cozy atmosphere in the space.
The interior uses natural wooden panels, and the ceilings and walls are finished with wood cladding. The warmth of the wood subtly contrasts with the cool shades of green and blue outside. The clean and modern design harmoniously combines with the natural surroundings, offering guests a comfortable and hospitable gastronomic experience, while the mountain landscape always remains visible.
