DStv in South Africa is introducing a new system of five streaming packages, starting from a price of R99 per month. These new packages are intended to replace the existing structure as MultiChoice responds to changing consumer habits and customer needs.
The announcement was made on Monday during a press conference at MultiChoice City in Randburg by William Ngwepe, CEO of MultiChoice (Pty) Ltd. This reorganization is positioned as the most significant overhaul of the company's package structure in the last 15 years.
What new DStv streaming packages are available?
Subscribers can choose one of five options: Starter for R99 per month with 85 channels; Select for R299 per month with 100 channels; Sports for R399 per month with 115 channels; Movies & Series for R500 per month with 115 channels; and Premium for R799 per month with 130 channels. Ngwepe noted that the packages are designed based on specific customer needs and do not represent overlapping offers trying to satisfy everyone.
These changes are also aimed at expanding MultiChoice's customer base while retaining existing subscribers. The new packages will be available in the South African market on September 17, 2026.
The Sports package at R399 per month includes over 115 channels, including 17 dedicated sports channels. It will feature Premier League football, UEFA football, PSL, cricket, local rugby, and one URC match per week, as well as UFC. However, some premium sports content will remain exclusive to the Premium package.
Which sports remain in the Premium package?
According to the announcement, disciplines such as Formula 1, golf, ATP tennis, and other premium sports content will remain exclusively in the Premium package. This means that the R399 Sports package will not provide access to all of DStv's premium sports content.
The Movies & Series package, priced at R500 per month, includes M-Net below the Premium tier for the first time. Additionally, this package provides access to kykNET, movie channels, Discovery, and BBC Earth. This is a significant change for subscribers who wish to watch M-Net content without paying for the most expensive Premium package.
What new DStv channels are being introduced?
As part of the reorganization, DStv is also launching a number of new targeted channel brands. These include: Wethu+, SuperSport Kickoff, SuperSport Football Plus, M-Net Movies+, Stars, and Legends. Ngwepe emphasized that the new and more engaging content will be part of MultiChoice's broader strategy to deliver customer value, not just packaging changes.
Why is DStv changing its packages?
These changes come against the backdrop of increasing competition for DStv in the streaming market and pressure on household budgets. Ngwepe stated that the company sought to respond to changing customer needs and habits while offering subscribers greater choice. He also stressed that the packaging is only part of MultiChoice's strategy, as investments in content and new targeted channels are also included in the offered service bundle. This restructuring marks a serious shift in how DStv delivers streaming content, allowing customers to choose tiers that better suit their content preferences.
