European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced a €200 million investment package for Greenland during her visit to Nuuk on Monday (equivalent to approximately $232 million). The goal of this initiative is to strengthen cooperation between the European Union and Greenland.
As stated by the European Commission in a press release, the 'Global Gateway' Partnership Package will support investments in Greenland this year and next.
During her visit, von der Leyen signed a joint declaration with Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen to strengthen their partnership.
According to the statement, this declaration and the investment package will expand interaction in the fields of education and fisheries. Furthermore, they will support the development of satellite and cable communications, hydropower, and the extraction of critical raw materials.
The package also provides assistance in improving housing conditions, developing sustainable tourism, and supporting small businesses.
Von der Leyen emphasized in her statement that Greenland can count on the EU, calling Greenland a 'strategic ally and trusted friend.' She added that this package will create new opportunities and enhance the EU's presence and involvement in Greenland and the Arctic.
It should be noted that Greenland is a self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark. Multiple statements by US President Donald Trump regarding US control over the island have caused concern among European allies and triggered a new round of discussions about Arctic security, sovereignty, and NATO cohesion.
