Pitru Paksha this year begins on September 26th. This period is dedicated to expressing respect, gratitude, and reverence for ancestors. During Pitru Paksha, people perform religious rites such as Shraddha, Tarpan, Pindapad, and feeding Brahmins, according to the date of deceased relatives. It is believed that performing such acts with sincere devotion brings the blessings of ancestors, ensuring peace, tranquility, and prosperity in the family.
In addition to religious rituals, directions hold special significance during this period in the context of Vastu Shastra. A specific direction is considered most suitable for holding a feast in honor of ancestors and placing their photographs.
The southwest direction of the house, known as Nairitya Kona, is traditionally considered the abode of ancestors. This direction is associated with the earth element, which symbolizes stability, strength, and foundation. This is why Nairitya Disha holds particular importance for matters related to ancestors. If there is enough space in the southwest sector of the house, one can organize a meal for Brahmins during Pitru Paksha, as well as observe the tradition of offering Dana and tributes in memory of ancestors. It is important to maintain cleanliness and purity of the atmosphere in the house during this period.
The southwest direction is also recommended for placing ancestral photographs. Placing portraits of ancestors in this part of the house allows for the observance of the tradition of respectful remembrance. Having ancestral photos in the proper place helps the family receive support and blessings from them. However, it should be remembered that when placing ancestral photos, they should not be placed together with deities in the home temple; according to Vastu and religious beliefs, the place for deities and the place for ancestors must be separate.
In modern times, many homes have limited space. If there is insufficient space in the southwest direction to host a meal for Brahmins, the available space from the south to the initial part of the west direction can be used. Thus, a meal in memory of ancestors can be organized by adapting the process to the home's conditions.
According to Vastu Shastra, the northeast direction, or Ishan Kona, is the place for deities. This direction is considered important for prayers and spiritual practices, and having a shrine in Ishan Kona is considered auspicious. Therefore, it is extremely important to maintain the cleanliness of this area. Placing ancestral photographs or holding a memorial meal for them in Ishan Kona is not considered appropriate, as the place for deities and the place for ancestors are different. Therefore, for matters related to ancestors, it is preferable to choose Nairitya Disha.
