Study shows similarity in speech rhythm across 48 world languages

German researchers conducted a study on speech rhythm in 48 different languages represented on all inhabited continents. The results showed that this rhythm exhibits significant similarities among them.

According to the study data, the median interval between sounds was two seconds, and the median bit accuracy was 0.37. Furthermore, it was established that the rhythm of human speech falls within the range characteristic of animal vocalizations.

Based on the bit accuracy indicator, humans are positioned somewhere between sea lions and black rhinoceroses. The results of this work were published in the journal Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences.
