MultiChoice, which is part of Canal+, has announced significant changes to its DStv streaming packages. A new five-tier offering will be launched in South Africa at the end of this month.
The announcement was made on Monday during a press conference at MultiChoice City in Randburg. During the event, Wellington Ngwepe, CEO of MultiChoice (Pty) Ltd, outlined the company's plans and justified the concept behind the new packages.
New DStv Packages Launch on September 17
The new subscription packages will be available in the South African market on September 17, 2026. They will consist of five options: Starter, Select, Sports, Movies & Series, and Premium. This news emerged following a leak of the proposed packages, previously published by the publication BusinessTech.
The new pricing structure is as follows:
Starter will cost 99 rand per month, Select — 299 rand, Sports — 399 rand, Movies & Series — 500 rand, and Premium — 799 rand per month.
According to Ngwepe, these changes are part of the company's efforts to respond to changing consumer demands and viewing habits. He emphasized that the new system is built around customer needs, unlike previous overlapping packages that tried to please everyone.
He also noted that the goal of the changes is to support subscriber base growth and retain existing customers, stating that 'at the core lies an obvious need for us to achieve strategic goals that ensure the growth of our subscriber base and the retention of subscribers who remain with us.'
DStv Focuses More on Choice and Value
Ngwepe stated that the new packages are designed to give customers more choice and better value, with each tier catering to specific viewing preferences. However, he stressed that the package change is only one aspect of the company's broader strategy. He added that MultiChoice is also investing in new content and targeted channels to strengthen its offering.
'Another critical issue is providing additional and more engaging content. In this regard, we have created a number of new targeted channels.'
Specialized Sports Package
One of the most significant transformations is the introduction of a dedicated sports package. This allows customers to pay exclusively for sports content instead of subscribing to a broader entertainment package. The Sports package will include over 115 channels, 17 of which are specialized sports channels.
For viewers whose interests are more focused on entertainment than sports, MultiChoice presents a separate Movies & Series package priced at 500 rand per month. This package is intended for customers who primarily want access to movies and TV series without necessarily paying for the full range of sports offerings.
Premium Remains the Comprehensive Option
MultiChoice will maintain its Premium package at 799 rand per month, positioned as the company's flagship offering for those who wish to access the widest range of content. Ngwepe reported that Premium subscribers will continue to have access to exclusive sports content, including Springbok rugby and international rugby, as well as Formula 1, golf, and tennis.
The revamped package structure marks a significant shift in DStv's positioning, allowing customers to choose packages that more accurately match the type of content they watch.
