George Bailey, Australia's selector chairman, supported Marnus Labuschagne despite his recent difficulties by including him in the 16-man squad for the upcoming tour of South Africa.
Although Labuschagne has had an inconsistent period, including a 1-1 series against Bangladesh, Bailey stated that he hopes for the player's 'positive contribution' in the upcoming Test series against South Africa. It is worth noting that Labuschagne has not scored a century in Test matches for almost three years and was recently dropped from the ODI team.
However, the selection panel under Bailey's leadership decided to retain the right-handed batsman for the Tests against South Africa, which begin in Durban on October 9. Bailey told reporters on Monday that while the desire to score more runs from 'Marn' is obvious, the team is confident in his ability to make a positive contribution to the squad.
He added that Labuschagne will continue to prepare and refine his approach for this series. Since he will not participate in the one-day series before the tour, this may give him the opportunity to focus exclusively on Test cricket, which he believes could be an advantage.
Inclusion of young player
The selectors also included the young all-rounder Cooper Connolly in the 16-man squad. Connolly, who scored a century in Tests against Bangladesh in June as an opponent, received recognition for his growth across several formats despite participating in several first-class matches.
Bailey noted that Connolly was selected primarily as a batsman, but his secondary skill (bowling) may be considered depending on conditions in South Africa. He believes Connolly has a game suitable for the middle order, and as he matures, he can play higher up the order.
Bailey emphasized that Connolly is a good player and constantly developing across all formats, showing a willingness to expand his playing capabilities. He also mentioned that Connolly could take a spot in the top three if necessary, as he is still young, but his ability to play different positions will grow with experience.
Discussion of top order structure
Regarding the top order structure, Bailey noted that Connolly could feature in the top three if required. He also mentioned that Matt Renshaw retains his place alongside Travis Head at the top of the order. Although discussions continue about Head potentially returning to fifth place and Steve Smith moving to third, Bailey stated that all options remain open, including the possibility of Josh Inglis participating.
Bailey noted that Head's success at number five, as well as his successes in the top order, will be discussed. He also mentioned that Steve Smith has played at number three for a long time and succeeded there. Thus, this will certainly be a subject of discussion. He added that Inglis might be slightly overlooked due to the large number of squads he has been in, but he is potentially capable of playing different positions, which he likely demonstrated more in baseball matches.
Currently, Australia ranks first in the world Test championship, while the reigning champions South Africa are in second place.
