Despite maintaining an unsystematic start after five Betway Premier League matches, their coach Fernando da Cruz admitted to serious problems in the team's defensive line.
On Sunday, the team defeated Siwelele FC 3-2 at Dobsonville Stadium, extending their winning streak to three wins and two draws. However, they conceded six goals in these five games, which, according to the coach, requires immediate correction.
Fernando da Cruz stated in an interview with SuperSport TV: 'We lack leadership, character, and individuality in our defensive line, and we need to fix that.' This is a candid assessment from the coach, whose team has otherwise shown positive momentum this season.
The team has scored 11 goals in five league matches, demonstrating sufficient firepower to win games. Nevertheless, their defensive statistics indicate that they are giving opponents opportunities that could ultimately cost them points.
The coach is particularly concerned about the number of chances they concede. He noted: 'In the first half, we created chances but couldn't score enough, and in the second half, they got two chances and scored both, so we have a problem with that; we must stop giving opponents chances.'
This problem becomes even more critical as the level of opponents increases. Although attacking productivity has helped the team overcome these difficulties, relying on it throughout the season could be risky.
Da Cruz emphasized: 'Our defense is greatly hindering us. We dropped points against Sundowns and Richards Bay due to our own mistakes, and unfortunately, nothing is changing. We cannot continue playing in this manner and expect positive results.'
The coach's comments also highlighted the need for experience and leadership in defense. While Chiefs are accumulating points and remaining unbeaten, strengthening the defense will be as crucial for challenging for top spots as continuing to score goals.
