Obtaining a driver's license in Norway proved to be a complex process for one Indian resident. Unlike the relatively straightforward procedure for obtaining a license in India, this process took him about two years and cost approximately six lakh rupees.
This Indian citizen, named Vinod, arrived in Norway in 2011. He soon realized the necessity of learning to drive for daily life. Driving conditions in Norway, such as snow, mountainous terrain, cold, and long distances, are significantly different from those in India. Initially, Vinod learned to drive with the help of a neighbor.
However, simply knowing how to operate a vehicle was not enough. To obtain a license in Norway, one must complete a series of mandatory courses, theoretical tests, safety training, and repeated practice. He had to practice in various conditions: on snowy roads, mountain routes, tunnels, highways, and small streets. Furthermore, the person observing the driving must have at least five years of driving experience.
Vinod noted that driving schools in Norway usually charge per hour of instruction, so the more practice required, the higher the costs became. Driving schools continue to train the student until they are convinced of their ability to safely operate a vehicle on the road. Eventually, he proceeded to take the final exam. This test lasted about an hour and included not only driving in urban traffic but also driving on mountain roads and through tunnels. However, Vinod's first attempt was unsuccessful.
Despite failing the first time, Vinod did not give up. He continued practicing for another two months. After that, he retook the exam and passed it successfully. The entire procedure took him two years, and the total cost was around six lakh rupees. He added that by today's standards, the cost incurred then could exceed ten lakh rupees.
In Vinod's opinion, the purpose of the driving test in Norway is not only to check a person's ability to drive a car. The main objective is to guarantee that they can ensure the safety of other people on the road. Thus, a driver's license is viewed not just as a permission to drive, but as a certificate of the ability to responsibly operate transport on the roads. Vinod also raised the issue of the licensing process in India, suggesting that if India required more effort to obtain a license, it might contribute to improving road safety.
