The waters of the Mediterranean Sea reached a record temperature of 28.54 degrees on August 13. According to data from Aemet, this figure is the highest recorded in the entire Mediterranean since at least 1940.
Aemet also reported that throughout almost all of August, the Mediterranean Sea set daily temperature records. Furthermore, at the end of June, the sea water temperature in the Mediterranean was already reaching unprecedented levels characteristic of the second half of August, as noted by Aemet in July.
In late June, values exceeding the norm by 2.6 degrees were recorded. This sharp rise in temperature caused the Mediterranean Sea to surpass even the 'average norm' for the period when the sea is usually warmest, i.e., the second half of August.
Aemet explained in July that these figures reflect an exceptional situation in early summer, when the Mediterranean Sea was abnormally warm as early as late June, showing temperatures typical of a much later period of the season.
