Chleboteka 'Okrąglak' / CUDO Concept: A Fusion of Modernism and Contemporary Design

The project team presented the design for Chleboteka 'Okrąglak' / CUDO, which draws its primary inspiration from the Okrąglak building itself—one of the most iconic modernist structures in Breslau. Instead of recreating its historical interior, the architectural language of the building was translated into a contemporary space for a bakery.

The circular geometry of the building became the foundation of the entire project, reflected in the design of the counter, carpentry, ceiling, and small details. To maintain a connection with modernist architecture, materials such as 'gorseciki' type mosaics from Warsaw, laminated wooden panels, decorative glass, and steel were used, supporting the brand's modern identity.

Another key focus was restoring the relationship between Okrąglak and Kostyushko Square. Large glass surfaces and a continuous bench around the building soften the boundary between the interior space and the public area, integrating the bakery into the city's daily life.

The main challenge was the extremely limited space—only 25 square meters. This area had to accommodate product display and sales, coffee preparation, storage, technical rooms, and staff support areas. Consequently, every element required a clearly defined function. Some functions were extended beyond the interior, notably through the surrounding bench, which provides additional seating.

Another difficulty was the context of preserving the building's historical heritage. Interventions, such as changing the facade color, required consultation with monument protection authorities. The project needed to strike a balance between a renewed appearance and respect for Okrąglak's architectural heritage.

The material palette references modernist architecture and includes custom-made 'gorseciki' mosaics, carpentry with decorative wood lamination, decorative glass, and steel details. Most of the main furniture items—including the display counter, exhibits, and shelves—were individually designed to maximize the use of the limited space.

The space layout considers both the operational logic of the bakery and the geometry of Okrąglak. The central display counter organizes customer flow and sales, while wall-mounted shelves combine product display and storage. Technical and service functions are placed compactly to preserve as much space as possible for visitors.
