Under the 'Jal Jeevan Mission,' the state of Uttar Pradesh has installed more rural water connections than any other state, even though the overall state coverage percentage is still striving to reach the national average.
The 'Jal Jeevan Mission,' launched nationally on August 15, 2019, aimed to provide tap water access in every rural household in India. Since Uttar Pradesh is the state with the largest number of rural families in the country, it is at the center of these efforts both in terms of scale and remaining distance to the goal.
By March 2025, Uttar Pradesh provided tap water to over 23.6 million rural households. Additionally, approximately 507,479 kilometers of pipelines were laid across the state. During this period, Uttar Pradesh was recognized as the state providing the highest number of new functional household connections by quantity.
The Government of Uttar Pradesh, in collaboration with the central government, has declared its commitment to spending about 28,000 crore rupees to complete this mission. The goal is to cover all 26.2 million rural families by 2028. The state has implemented the mobile application 'Jal Sarathi' to monitor ongoing projects at the village level.
