Tension peaked between young East Zone batsman Vaibhav Suryavanshi and the captain of the opposing team, Tilak Verma, during the Dalip Trophy final match (2026-27). An initial friendly conversation and banter suddenly escalated into a sharp argument, forcing the umpires to intervene and restore order on the field.
This incident occurred in the eleventh over of the first half of the East Zone's innings. The South Zone captain, Tilak Verma, repeatedly spoke to Vaibhav Suryavanshi and teased him about his role as vice-captain. Tilak addressed Vaibhav with the words: 'What kind of guy is this vice-captain.'
Soon, the teasing turned into a serious dispute. Tilak Verma approached the 15-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi and made a light gesture, hinting at a punch. Vaibhav did not back down but immediately met his aggression. Seeing the growing tension between them, the umpire intervened and separated the players.
Before the dispute with Tilak Verma, Vaibhav Suryavanshi was actively scoring runs with the bat. Together with Abhimanyu Ishwar, he provided a strong start for the East Zone. They built a partnership of 100 runs in the first innings. Vaibhav played a quick innings, scoring 44 runs in just 37 balls, including five fours and one six.
However, his innings was interrupted by a quick delivery from Chama Milind before he could reach fifty. Vaibhav Suryavanshi attempted a powerful shot against a short ball, but due to an extra lift, the ball hit the upper part of the bat and flew towards the mid-wicket. Tanay Tyagarajan, running from deep square leg, caught the magnificent ball.
Despite his innings ending at 44 runs, he presented a completely different picture of his red-ball cricket prowess. In previous matches scoring 92 and 40 runs in the semi-final, he had also shown aggressive play in the Dalip Trophy final. After this tournament, Vaibhav's focus will shift to his next assignment with the Indian national team. He will participate in a three-match T20 series against Afghanistan. The first match of the series is scheduled for September 13th at Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.
