The company responsible for the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan railway project announced on Saturday that a significant milestone has been reached in the development of the cross-border route: the first tunnel has been dug on the Kyrgyz section.
According to data from the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan Railway Company, which is a joint venture established by enterprises authorized by the three governments, the dug tunnel named Kosh Dobo North No. 2 is 209.6 meters long and is the first tunnel on the Kyrgyz section.
Construction work began in June 2025. Since then, construction of 27 tunnels, 43 bridges, and 88 embankment sections has started, and 20 railway stations are being built.
This railway project is a landmark for China, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan within the framework of the 'Belt and Road' initiative. Upon completion, it will provide new railway connections between China and Central Asia.
The route will run from Kashgar, located in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of China, through the border city of Jalalabad in Kyrgyzstan, and further to the eastern Uzbek city of Andijan. The total length of the railway will exceed 500 kilometers, including 304.84 kilometers within Kyrgyzstan.
