Indian women's team captain Harmpreet Kaur has set a remarkable record, becoming the first athlete in the world to lead a team in 150 T20 International matches. This achievement was realized during a match against Pakistan held in Dubai as part of the Women's Asia Cup 2026.
This record is particularly significant because well-known players such as M.S. Dhoni, Virat Kohli, and Rohit Sharma were unable to reach the century mark in T20 captaincy. Harmpreet Kaur successfully accomplished a feat that these legends could not achieve.
Compared to men's cricket, where the record belongs to Gerhard Erasmus of Namibia with 91 T20 captaincy matches, in women's cricket, Kamari Atapattu from Sri Lanka is second with 121 matches, and Meg Lanning from Australia led the team in 100 matches.
According to a statement from BCCI Women dated September 5, 2026, Harmpreet Kaur became the first athlete to lead a team in 150 T20Is.
Harmpreet began her journey as a captain in 2016. In the previous 149 matches, she led the Indian team to victory in 86 matches. Furthermore, while serving as captain, she scored 3301 runs and actively participated in batting attacks.
During the toss, she expressed joy about achieving this record, noting that playing her 150th match as captain is a huge accomplishment. She emphasized the importance of enjoying the game and stated her intention to try and keep Pakistan's score as low as possible.
In the match taking place in Dubai, Pakistan captain Fatima Sana won the toss and decided that her team would bat first, while India would field. The Indian team has already secured its spot in the tournament semi-finals by winning both of its first two matches and ranks first in Group A. For Pakistan, this is their second match, and a win is crucial for them to advance to the semi-finals. Neither team made any changes to their squad.
