The coach of Rio Ave, Sotiris Silaidopoulos, demanded that the players show 'character and determination' in the upcoming match against Santa Clara. This request came after the team's defeat by Sporting on Sunday, during the fourth round of the Portuguese football league I Liga.
Silaidopoulos admitted that the team played below its usual level in the 4-0 match against Sporting. Nevertheless, he noted that Rio Ave learned the necessary lessons and conducted training sessions this week to address the identified problems.
He emphasized the need to look forward, recover from setbacks, and react to them. These qualities, according to him, are what he is preparing the team for the difficult and demanding match against Santa Clara, which will take place on a field where play is difficult and where weather conditions also play a significant role.
The coach drew attention to the organization of the team from the Azores islands, especially in the midfield, calling it 'possibly one of the most dangerous teams in transitional attacks.' He defined this as one of the main challenges for Vila-Condense players.
Silaidopoulos analyzed the match against Sporting, noting several shortcomings, especially when the team lost possession and the opponent initiated a counterattack. He stated that the team's positioning was unbalanced. It is necessary to maintain concentration, follow the plan, and pay attention to all potential problems, while remaining true to their principles.
Therefore, Sotiris called for greater caution in ball possession and quick reaction to losing the ball, as well as a 'mentality, fighting spirit, and cohesion' in a game where numerous duels are expected. He also highlighted the importance of set pieces.
Furthermore, the coach touched upon the reinforcements who arrived at the end of the transfer window, noting that they increase squad depth and competitiveness. He reported that some of these new players may be included in the Azores national team.
He explained that most of the new players have already participated in games and have had minutes with their clubs, so they are physically ready, but they require time to adapt to the team. However, some of them will be included in the call-up list.
Regarding injured players—Nelson Ebbi, Ryan Guilherme, Brandon Aguilera, Mista, and Diogo Nascimento—Silaidopoulos acknowledged their absence but refused to rush their return, insisting that they will only come back when fully ready.
Rio Ave, currently in 13th place with three points, will play this Sunday at Santa Clara's ground, which is in fourth place with eight points. The match is scheduled for 14:30 local time (15:30 Lisbon time) and will be officiated by Anjoni Rodrigues from the Madeira Football Association.
