iRobot has launched the Roomba Duo, a new vacuum robot designed to offer functionality equivalent to two appliances. This model features a robust design and integrates two parts: a main unit focused on heavy-duty tasks and floor washing, and a second unit dedicated to more conventional vacuuming and mopping functions.
The secondary robot, named Roomba Plus 757, is dispensed by the larger unit via a mechanical arm and is primarily used in smaller areas. During presentations, the descent mechanism of the standard unit demonstrated good functionality, reminiscent of the brand's first robot equipped with a mopping function, the J7 Combo, as reported by The Verge.
The product was exhibited at IFA 2026, an annual technology fair held in Berlin, Germany. However, since it is a prototype, iRobot has not yet confirmed the price or commercial release date of the Roomba Duo.
This new robotic vacuum from iRobot presents a distinct approach compared to other devices in the sector. The larger unit not only cleans but also acts as an autonomous station for the smaller robot. In addition to cleaning, vacuuming, and washing, it absorbs dirt from the reduced model and has a reservoir for dirty water.
According to information provided by iRobot, this is its most powerful robot, possessing capacity comparable to upright vacuums. Furthermore, it operates as a steam mop, using hot steam and 46 Newtons of suction. If the robot does not reach a lower area, the Duo releases the smaller unit to perform the task.
The size of the Duo also deserves mention due to its structure, which is necessary to accommodate the dirty water reservoirs and the smaller attached Roomba itself. Its appearance evokes movie androids, such as R2D2 from Star Wars or Wall-E from Disney. The main sensor is located on the smaller unit, at the top of the assembly, simulating the robot's 'eyes.'
During the demonstration, it was observed that the model required supervision and recharging at certain times, suggesting limited mobility at the moment. As it is a prototype, iRobot plans to improve this aspect in the coming months.
