The price of diesel fuel in the United States reached a new record on Friday as disruptions related to the US-Iran war put pressure on consumers.
According to data from the AAA (American Automobile Association), the cost of fuel is currently $5.85 per gallon, which is significantly higher compared to the price of $3.71 a year ago.
Diesel is used by farmers to operate machinery and also powers trucks that deliver groceries to stores. Farmers in the US have faced a double blow due to rising prices for fertilizers and diesel fuel at the start of the spring planting season.
The Independent Grocers Alliance calculated that fuel costs can account for 15 to 30 percent of the total cost of some food items.
In addition to diesel, the cost of regular gasoline has also risen noticeably, averaging $4.15 per gallon, compared to $3.20 last year.
