MIMO Festival returns to Olinda with over 40 free attractions from September 25 to 27

The MIMO Festival is returning to Olinda, scheduled to take place from September 25 to 27. This event, created in the city in 2004 under the name International Music Showcase in Olinda (MIMO), will offer over 40 free activities, covering shows, concerts, film screenings, and workshops. The entire program will be distributed throughout the Historic Site, utilizing locations such as churches and cultural centers.

Musical Highlights and Performances

Among the main shows, Praça do Carmo will host BaianaSystem on Friday, the 25th, at midnight. On Sunday, the 27th, the same stage will feature the Nação Zumbi Sinfônico – 30 Years of Afrocyberdelia project at 8 p.m. This concert will bring together the Pernambucan band along with an orchestra composed of approximately 40 musicians, presenting arrangements by Mateus Alves and directed by Henrique Albino. This performance also coincides with the 60th anniversary of Chico Science.

The national program will feature performances by Alice Caymmi, with her show CAYMMI, and Cida Moreira, who will present the repertoire Me acalmo danando – The music of Angela Ro Ro. In the instrumental segment, there will be names such as Gabriele Leite, Lais de Assis, João Gaspar, Bianca Gismonti, and the Portuguese artist Manuel de Oliveira. Additionally, the Duo Frevo project, where César Michiles and Romero Medeiros combine flute and piano in the Pernambucan musical genre, is part of the agenda.

On the international scene, there will be performances by Tinariwen, from Mali; Tiken Jah Fakoly, from Ivory Coast; Capicua, from Portugal; DJ Reborn, from the United States, recognized as the official DJ of Ms. Lauryn Hill; and the Cape Verdean band Ferro Gaita, linked to the revitalization of funaná, a traditional rhythm from Cape Verde.

Various addresses in the historic center will host the shows, including the Church of Carmo, the Monastery of São Bento, the Church of São Pedro, the Church of Amparo, and Praça do Carmo.

Cinema and Musical Training

Alongside the shows, the MIMO Petrobras Film Festival will screen 15 films for free at the Fernando Santa Cruz Theater, located inside the Eufrásio Barbosa Market. The curation focuses mainly on unpublished productions from Pernambuco and films that have not yet been released in commercial circuits.

In addition to the musical performances, the MIMO Festival will offer a series of activities focused on musical training, encompassing workshops, classes, and masterclasses, held in collaboration with participating artists. These activities primarily take place at the Olinda Musical Education Center (CEMO) and the Pernambucan Conservatory of Music (CPM).

Detailed Daily Schedule

On Friday, the 25th, CEMO will host the activity O Piano no Frevo: Language, Harmony, and Improvisation, with Romero Medeiros, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Simultaneously, at CPM, Lais de Assis will teach Sotaque da Viola Nordestina: Paths, Languages, and Reinventions, during the same period. Later, from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., João Gaspar will lead Ideas and Creativity: How to Organize Your Guitar Practice, while Ferro Gaita will present From Gaita to Funaná: Rhythm, Tradition, and Cape Verdean Identity.

On Saturday, the 26th, the program continues at CPM, with two activities scheduled from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.: Gabriele Leite will present Brazilian Guitar: Technique, Interpretation, and Identity, and Bianca Gismonti and Manuel de Oliveira will conduct Cultural Dialogues Brazil–Iberia.

On this day, the Forum of Ideas will take place at the Fernando Santa Cruz Theater, expanding the program with debates. At 11 a.m., Capicua will participate in the meeting Women in Hip-Hop: Voice, Territory, and Identity. In the afternoon, at 3 p.m., Cida Moreira will present The Song of the Other – Interpretation, Identity, and Reinvention. These meetings aim to promote conversations based on the journeys and work of the artists.

Finally, on Sunday, the 27th, the educational program will give way to the meeting The Crossings and the Music of Letieres Leite, from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m., led by Iris de Oliveira, Day Sena, and Marileide Alves, dedicated to the musician's trajectory.

Ipiranga Museum offers special free programming for the September 7th holiday

The Ipiranga Museum, located in São Paulo, will promote a special and free schedule to celebrate the September 7th holiday. On Monday, the venue will host another edition of the event called Museum in Festa, which will include theater performances, music, dance, workshops, and guided tours of the exhibitions.

This program is carried out in collaboration with Sesc and will take place from 9 am to 6 pm, marking the celebrations of the institution's 130th anniversary, which began in September 2025. The various activities are distributed throughout the internal and external areas of the building and are aimed at an audience of all ages.

One of the highlights is the show ACORDA!, presented by Grupo Esparrama, which opens the program at 10 am on the esplanade. This street theater piece uses the facade of the Ipiranga Museum as a backdrop and invites the public to follow a narrative based on the universe of imagination and sleep.

Starting at 11:30 am, the esplanade will host the dance activity Corpo em Movimento – Afrocorporeal Experiments, focusing on the knowledge and manifestations of the black body. Two hours later, at 1:30 pm, the circus performance R.U.A. will be shown, blending balance with magic using recycled objects.

Next, at 2:30 pm, the Extraordinary Ball of Figures will take over the space with giant puppets and live music, presenting a show inspired by popular traditions. The closing of activities on the esplanade will take place at 5 pm, with DJ Hum playing sets covering hip hop, reggae, 1980s boogie, and samba rock.

Afro-Brazilian culture will also be present in other activities during the holiday. In the Pensador Space, at 1 pm, the Afro-Brazilian Choir for Elderly People, composed of participants from Sesc Ipiranga's Social Work with the Elderly, will present chants from African matrices and songs from the Afro-Brazilian repertoire.

Later, at 2:30 pm, the same location will host the dance class Dance! Brazilities, which explores Brazilian sounds and black influences. In the garden, at 3:30 pm, the Capoeira Musical Gathering will combine spoken poetry with capoeira and national rhythms.

Throughout the holiday, the public will have free access to the exhibitions Uma História do Brasil, Passados Imaginados, and Para Entender o Museu. Visits are from 9 am to 6 pm, with the last entry time at 5 pm, and tickets will be distributed on the 7th starting at 9 am.

One of the central attractions, especially on dates like September 7th, is the exhibition Uma História do Brasil, which occupies the hall, the main staircase, and the Noble Hall, and displays the famous painting Independence or Death! by Pedro Américo. The other two shows complement the experience: Passados Imaginados displays paintings about the encounter between indigenous people and Portuguese and the past of the city of São Paulo, while Para Entender o Museu details the history of the building, including a model made by architect Tommaso Gaudenzio Bezzi in the 1880s.

In addition to performances and exhibitions, Museum in Festa will offer outdoor activities. At the Nazaré Terrace, visitors can participate in drawing, watercolor, screen printing, and ceramics workshops. Children will also have specific activities, such as ceramic embroidery, collage, and fantastic animal drawings. The space will also host the Sankofa Arcade Trilogy, with afrofuturist games that connect past, present, and future through narratives of black women.

At the Xavier Terrace, the focus will be on the Ipiranga territory. At 10 am, the tour Presença Negra nas Margens (Nada Plácidas) of Ipiranga will revisit the history of the neighborhood from the perspective of the Black Movement. Later, at 2 pm, the Árvores do Ipiranga activity aims to present the species of the woods and their relationship with the area.

Throughout the day, there will also be guided tours of the Independence Park and its gardens, as well as the Quiz da Fila, an educational test for those waiting to enter the exhibitions. The program guarantees accessibility resources, such as sign language, audio description, sensory backpacks, and a comfort and regulation space, in addition to a hydration point.
