The new coach of Bafana Bafana, Pitso Mosimane, has presented a preliminary squad for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Guinea and Eritrea, as well as for a friendly match against Egypt next month.
Only one player from Kaizer Chiefs was included in this preliminary list. Mosimane will officially start his second job on Saturday, September 26, with the home match against Guinea, whose venue has not yet been announced by SAFA. Four days later, the team will play away against Eritrea at a presumed neutral venue in Egypt.
After the match against Eritrea, Bafana will play a friendly match against the Pharaohs on October 4th at Cairo International Stadium. Speaking at his official presentation at SAFA House on Tuesday, Mosimane emphasized that for the qualifiers, he plans to use the main squad of his predecessor, Hugo Broos. However, during the friendly match against Egypt, he intends to give opportunities to reserve players and newcomers.
The preliminary squad presented on Friday evening reflects this strategy, combining a large number of familiar faces with several newcomers. The goalkeeping group remains unchanged: Ronwen Williams, Sipho Chen, and Ricardo Goss remain constant.
Defensively, inclusions such as Tshepo Mashilone and current Premier League defender Betway Lebone Seema were noted. Additionally, Tapelo Morena returned to the team after missing the World Cup and is expected to replace the injured Huliso Mudau.
Mosimane also selected experienced players in midfield. Lebogang Maboe, the only Chiefs representative in the squad, is expected to be in the final selection, replacing the injured Talente Mbatata.
Bafana's attacking line looks strong. In addition to the main squad, Puso Dithejane and Cassius Mailula received recognition for their impressive form with Chicago Fire and Mamelodi Sundowns, respectively. Luther Singh and Shandre Campbell were also included in the squad.
Mosimane is expected to announce the final squad in the coming days, as there are just over three weeks until the home match against Guinea.
