Due to the increasing frequency and intensity of heatwaves, Turismo de Portugal will allocate an amount of one million euros for the implementation of climate shelters.
A public competition has been launched so that interested municipalities can obtain funding intended for the creation of protection sites against extreme heat for the population.
Carlos Abade, president of Turismo de Portugal, informed that applications from 18 local authorities located in various parts of the country have already been received.
Currently, Portugal has 188 registered climate shelters in the Stay Cool network, distributed across 67 municipalities, with these spaces being libraries, museums, or monuments.
The objective of this new competition is to expand this existing network and introduce external solutions, such as drinking water fountains, misting systems, shaded trees, or pergolas.
