Investment in Indian startups declined amid difficulties with large deals

In the first week of September, venture funding for Indian startups showed a decline as the ecosystem continues to face challenges in attracting large deals. The total funding volume for this week amounted to $196 million USD, distributed across 24 deals. This is noticeably less than the $245 million attracted last week.

The current trend in the Indian startup sector indicates that the highest activity in terms of the number of deals occurs in the earliest stages of financing, although the amount of funds raised at these stages remains low. Specifically, 12 deals were registered at the pre-Series A stage, but they only brought in $24 million.

However, the late-stage category received a significant boost thanks to a $70 million funding round attracted by Ultrahuman. A positive aspect of this week was the diversity of sectors into which investors directed their funds, including healthtech, fintech, D2C, and EV.

Despite this, the Indian startup ecosystem still lacks the impetus to increase capital inflow, which is largely related to the absence of a large pool of authoritative artificial intelligence startups. Nevertheless, there is an expectation that the situation will improve in the coming months.

Ultrahuman, a company specializing in intelligent healthcare solutions based in Bengaluru, attracted $70 million from Qualcomm Ventures, Labcorp, Alpha Wave, Blume Ventures, Nexus Venture Partners, and Alteria.

The battery services startup Yuma Energy secured $35 million led by Magna International. The business Nextgen Finance, a new NBFC, attracted approximately $23 million (215 crore rupees) from Beams Fintech Fund I, Baring Private Equity India Fund 6, Saison Capital, and UNLEASH 1st Investment Partnership.

The D2C startup Cradlewise raised $12 million from 3one4 Capital and Prudent Investment Management. The local sneaker brand Comet attracted about $10.2 million (100 crore rupees) from Verlinvest, Elevation Capital, Nexus Venture Partners, and private investors.

Additionally, the SpaceTech startup Kepler Aerospace received $8 million from Blue Ashva Capital, Finvolve India Accelerator, and other investors.
