Smoking increases death risk by 55% in people with diabetes; experts call for active smoking cessation treatment

According to data from a new international consensus based on the analysis of numerous studies, smoking increases the probability of death from any cause by 55% among individuals suffering from diabetes.

Experts emphasize that patients who continue to smoke should be offered pharmacological treatment, intensive behavioral counseling, and regular monitoring, instead of being limited to a one-time warning about the need to quit smoking. This approach is considered an integral part of type 2 diabetes treatment.

The results of the meta-analysis covered 48 studies involving 1.13 million people. Furthermore, a separate study conducted on a sample of about 130,000 diabetics showed that smokers have 48% higher all-cause mortality and 36% higher cardiovascular mortality.
