Some films are created not only on screen but also through the story that unfolds behind the scenes. 'Pakida' is one such film whose beauty and unforgettable performance by Meena Kumari conceal a long history filled with love, disagreements, illnesses, rumors, and years of effort.
The classic film, which premiered in 1972, is now presented to the world in a new format after 54 years. The Heritage Foundation spent two years restoring it in 4K resolution, and the premiere will take place at the Lumière Festival in France. Following this, the film will also be shown at the London Film Festival.
However, the true story of 'Pakida' began long before its release. Kamal Amrohi started filming in 1956. Initially, the film was shot in black and white, but after the advent of color cinematography, he decided to reshoot it in Eastman Color. Then, when the Cinémascope period arrived, Amrohi's perfectionism regarding the visual aspect further prolonged the shooting process.
Due to expensive sets, frequent changes, location issues, and technical difficulties, filming often stopped. Moreover, some old black and white negatives were destroyed in a studio fire.
Next, the most personal and discussed aspect of this story is revealed. Meena Kumari and Kamal Amrohi were married, but tension in their relationship grew. They divorced in 1964, and with that, work on 'Pakida' was put on hold. During this period, Meena Kumari's life became complicated by alcohol problems and deteriorating health. In 1968, she was diagnosed with liver cirrhosis and had to go abroad for treatment. The film remained almost unfinished.
Dharmendra was also involved in this story. According to reports, Dharmendra was supposed to be the hero alongside Meena Kumari, and after discussions about their closeness, Kamal Amrohi excluded him from the project. Although this assertion has long been part of anecdotes and reports, there are various interpretations of this event. Later, Raj Kumar played the role of Salim in the film.
The film's difficulties did not end there. Cinematographer Joseph Wirsching passed away in 1967. Composer Ghulam Mohammed also died before the film's release, after which Naushad completed the background music. Ultimately, following the persuasion of Sunil Dutt and Nargis, Meena Kumari resumed work on the film in 1969. By then, her illness had severely weakened her health, but she decided to finish the film.
'Pakida' was released on February 4, 1972, and just a few weeks later, Meena Kumari passed away. Her death lent a special emotional value to the film. Today, 54 years later, as 'Pakida' returns to the world in 4K format, all facets of Meena Kumari's life are visible, who transformed this film not just into a classic, but into one of the most tragic stories in the history of Hindi cinema.
