A video that went viral on social media from Maharashtra shows a person with a disability crossing railway tracks using crutches. The most concerning aspect is that a train was scheduled to pass through that spot just minutes after he began his crossing.
The video shows the disabled person attempting to cross the railway tracks while leaning on crutches. It is evident that moving is difficult for him, and he takes slow steps trying to get from one side to the other. Stones and other objects on the tracks make it even harder for him to move forward, yet he continues to try and cross the line.
The proximity of the approaching train made the situation even more dangerous. If he had not managed to cross in time, a major accident could have occurred. Trains travel at high speeds, leaving little time for a person on the tracks to react, which could have resulted in a fatal tragedy. When this person reached the other platform, people there offered him assistance. They approached, supported him, and helped him onto the platform, thereby saving his life in time.
After the video appeared online, the public expressed serious concern. Many stated that railway tracks should never be crossed under any circumstances. People also emphasized the need for special facilities at railway stations for passengers with disabilities so they do not have to walk onto the tracks to change platforms. This incident called into question the quality of station infrastructure for people with disabilities.
For such passengers, the availability of ramps, elevators, and easy routes is crucial. If a person has difficulty walking, using stairs or footbridges can be challenging. Therefore, alternative and safe routes are vital at the station. Railway tracks should never serve as a path for pedestrians or for crossing between platforms. Even when a train is visible from a distance, it is difficult to judge its speed. Consequently, passengers must always use pedestrian bridges, ramps, elevators, or safe routes provided by the railway. Furthermore, the railway should pay more attention to providing such amenities for people with disabilities so that no one has to risk their life by crossing the tracks.
