Questions have arisen regarding the recent overseas tours of the Indian team. The Indian squad's performance in limited-overs matches in Ireland and England did not meet expectations. Consequently, an important meeting was held by the BCCI at its headquarters in Mumbai on Thursday. However, the chief selector, Ajit Agarkar, was not present at this meeting.
Agarkar's absence sparked discussion, as his contract is set to expire at the end of September. It was anticipated that the head of the selection committee and his future might be discussed at the gathering. Nevertheless, BCCI Secretary Devdutt Saykiya clarified that Agarkar's contract renewal was not discussed during the Thursday meeting.
BCCI Secretary Devdutt Saykiya explained the reason for Agarkar's non-attendance. He stated that the meeting was called with very short notice. At that time, Agarkar was not in Mumbai. According to Saykiya, Agarkar was in a location from which participation via video conference was impossible. Saykiya stated on Thursday: 'He was out of town today. He could not attend the meeting because it was called with very short notice. Ajit was not in the city, so he could not participate. He was in a place where, despite all his efforts, he could not connect online.'
Ajit Agarkar's current contract is valid until the end of September, making his absence raise the main question of his contract extension. However, the BCCI secretary declined to discuss this matter. When asked if Agarkar's contract renewal was discussed at the meeting, he gave a clear answer: 'There were no such discussions at today's meeting.'
The BCCI meeting was convened primarily to analyze the results of India's tours in Ireland and England. Previously, India played a two-match T20I series against Ireland, which the team lost 0-2. This was followed by a tour to England, where India lost a five-match T20I series 1-4, and suffered a defeat 1-2 in a three-match ODI series. Poor results in two consecutive overseas limited-overs tours forced the BCCI to conduct a review. Saykiya noted that the meeting covered not only the results but also player fitness issues and persistent injuries.
Many prominent figures in Indian cricket attended this meeting in Mumbai. Among them were Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill, T20I captain Shreyas Iyer, head coach Gautam Gambhir, Vice President of Cricket Excellence of the BCCI Lakshman, as well as BCCI staff members.
Under Ajit Agarkar's leadership as chief selector, the Indian team achieved many significant successes. During his tenure, India reached the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup. Subsequently, the team won the T20 World Cup title twice in 2024 and 2026. However, major changes also occurred in Indian cricket during this period. Former captains Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma announced their retirement from Test and T20I cricket. Furthermore, legendary spinner Ravichandran Ashwin also bid farewell to his international career during this time.
The BCCI has not made any decisions regarding Agarkar's contract currently. This issue was also not raised at the Thursday meeting. The council's focus was concentrated on the failures in the Ireland and England tours, the team's performance, player fitness, and recurring injuries. Therefore, it is expected that Agarkar's future picture will become clearer by the end of September. As of now, no official decision from the BCCI regarding the extension or termination of his contract has been issued.
