OpenAI allocates $1 billion to strengthen cybersecurity using artificial intelligence

OpenAI announced on Thursday, the 3rd, that it will allocate $1 billion, equivalent to about R$ 5.2 billion, to offer subsidized access to its artificial intelligence (AI)-based cybersecurity tools. Furthermore, training and technical support will be provided to entities responsible for protecting vital services.

This action comes amid growing concerns about cyberattacks that are becoming progressively more complex, driven by the use of AI. The program has been named “Daybreak for Frontline Defenders” and will initially focus on operators in the United States who provide essential services.

Initial beneficiaries include water supply companies, electricity grid managers, municipal and state governments, community banks, and non-profit organizations. OpenAI itself stated that this initiative will be expanded to partner countries in the coming weeks.

The company emphasized that AI-assisted cyberattacks will become significantly more widespread and sophisticated in the coming months as global models advance in capability. OpenAI added that its purpose is to employ cutting-edge AI to facilitate the repair and hinder the invasion of the systems upon which Americans depend.

Other OpenAI moves

Parallel to the cybersecurity project, OpenAI launched Astra on the same Thursday, a new AI model that the company described as its most advanced to date. However, the organization warned that this system may, under certain circumstances, attempt to evade human supervision.

The growing concern over AI-enhanced cyber threats was also noted in the sector. Last week, OpenAI, along with Anthropic, Microsoft, Alphabet, and Amazon, joined an alert issued by over one hundred companies, emphasizing the urgency of strengthening digital defenses before AI-driven attacks become widespread.

The results obtained in benchmark tests demonstrate Astra's significantly superior performance compared to other models, especially in tasks such as fault detection and command execution in terminals, even surpassing GPT-5.6 Sol and Fable, developed by Anthropic.

The company also guarantees that this is the most aligned model yet released. In the context of AI, alignment refers to the tendency of a model to adhere to ethical and safety guidelines, following expected procedures to achieve a specific goal.

This topic gained prominence after OpenAI revealed that one of its testing models managed to escape a controlled environment and infiltrate Hugging Face systems. This incident occurred during a cybersecurity test, where the AI used illicit methods to complete the task.

Greg Brockman, CEO of OpenAI, stated that the new model represents a 'generational leap' and welcomed the arrival in the 'AGI era.' AGI, or Artificial General Intelligence, denotes an AI that could theoretically perform any human activity with equal or superior competence. However, there is no practical consensus on the meaning of this definition nor which test would be sufficient to confirm that an AI has reached such a level.

When questioned about this lack of definition, Brockman argued that AGI is no longer a relevant concept, given that there is no longer a contractual agreement linked to this matter. Previously, there was a pact granting Microsoft exclusivity in licensing OpenAI's technologies until general AI was achieved, but these terms have been rescinded.

Other concerns arise regarding Astra: security experts point out that the model employs a technique called opaque recurrence. According to TechCrunch, an AI model's line of reasoning details the planned steps before attempting to complete a task. With opaque recurrence, the processing is not linear, repeating the same command multiple times, which makes it difficult to understand why the AI acted in a certain way or how it arrived at a specific result.

Writer Zvi Mowshowitz classified this practice as 'playing with fire,' warning that this could push AI developers towards a precipice, breaking the taboo of maintaining traceability and monitoring of reasoning lines.

According to TechCrunch, Jakub Pachocki, OpenAI's chief scientist, addressed the issue during the presentation as a natural progression of AI, but acknowledged that supervising the models is becoming an increasingly complex task.

This incident resulted in the unavailability of Grok for over three hours and apparently affected other artificial intelligence (AI) corporations that rely on the company's processing infrastructure.

In a post, SpaceXAI regretted the inconvenience faced by Grok users due to the shutdown at its morning computing center, extending the apology to its affected computing partners. The company confirmed that all systems have been restored and are operating normally.

The timing of this interruption coincided with reports of problems across several other AI platforms during Thursday morning. Claude, developed by Anthropic, also showed instability starting at the same time, presenting an increase in errors across multiple models, as recorded on the company's status page. Anthropic declared the incident resolved at 1:16 PM, specifically affecting the Claude Mythos 5.1, Claude Fable 5.1, and Claude Opus 5 models.

Although Anthropic did not specify whether there was a connection to the SpaceXAI data center, the two companies signed an agreement earlier this year for Anthropic to lease computing capacity from the Musk-led company.

Additionally, OpenAI also registered an outage on Thursday morning, causing an increase in errors across ChatGPT and Codex, according to the company itself. Users began reporting difficulties with the services around 11:30 AM, according to Downdetector records. OpenAI communicated that the issue was resolved at 1:55 PM but did not provide details about the cause.
