A small snake was found on August 14 near the shelves in the bakery section of a supermarket in the town of Mayport, England.
The snake, nicknamed 'Crumbs' (which translates from Portuguese to 'crumbs'), was rescued by the organization Pet Encounter, which took it under its care.
The environmental education organization explained the choice of name by stating that the snake was discovered next to bread. After the rescue, the snake was taken to a local veterinarian, where it underwent a full examination and received an electrolyte shower.
According to a report by the BBC, Pet Encounter has recorded a significant increase in the number of snake rescues. This year, the organization is monitoring 21 animals, compared to 14 animals in 2025.
Animal handler Ben Nicholson suggested that the rising cost of living may contribute to many owners abandoning their pets. He also noted that many people acquire exotic animals without prior research into the necessary conditions for their keeping.
