Government will allow installation of emission reduction devices on old trucks and buses

As part of a new initiative to limit transport pollution, the government will soon permit the installation of emission control devices (RECDs) on old polluting trucks and buses. These devices are capable of reducing particulate matter emissions by up to 90% and nitrogen oxide emissions by up to 60%.

The Minister of Road Transport, Nitin Gadkari, announced this measure on Thursday. This decision will supplement the government's program for phasing out and replacing outdated heavy vehicles.

He also emphasized the importance of implementing innovative solutions in public transport in second, third-tier, and smaller cities. Gadkari noted that metro projects are often too capital-intensive to be viable in such settlements.
