Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso believes that the current situation at the top of the Betway Premiership table will change in the coming weeks due to the tight game schedule, forcing teams to adjust their tactical approaches.
Mamelodi Sundowns and champions Orlando Pirates currently have an equal number of points—13 after five rounds, with Pirates leading on goal difference. The similar start to the season for both teams led many to assume that the title race would last until the very end, especially considering the upcoming MTN8 final on October 10th.
However, Cardoso disagrees with this view. The Portuguese coach believes the picture will change as both teams begin to fulfill other obligations, including CAF Champions League qualifying rounds.
After his team defeated Milford 2-0 on Wednesday evening at Loftus Versfeld stadium, Cardoso stated: 'I think we will enter December in a completely different shape than we are now.' He added that in the coming weeks, both teams will face a heavy schedule due to Champions League qualifiers, and he hopes they can advance and compete for something significant.
Cardoso also noted that the character of Kaizer Chiefs will be tested as they begin their path to the Confederation Cup qualifiers after a strong start to the season. The coach emphasized that the pressure will be immense, as the best players must be fielded in the Champions League to win, which will determine the teams. Nevertheless, he believes it is too early to draw conclusions about the fate of all three teams.
Before Sundowns can fully concentrate on defending its continental title, it needs to maintain momentum in the league by starting with a visit to Golden Arrows at King Zwelithini stadium on Sunday (at 15:00). Arrows has established itself as a difficult opponent for Sundowns this season. Both teams played in the MTN8 semi-finals with an aggregate score of 3-3, and Sundowns ultimately advanced thanks to a goal scored away.
Given that they will meet for the third time in two weeks, and Abafana Bes’thende aims to avenge the MTN8 defeat, Cardoso understands that his team needs to be in top form. He stated that previous games, especially the away match, need to be analyzed because specific moments occurred there. Furthermore, he needs to rest most players due to fatigue, while Arrows has rested well, so freshness is required for competitive play.
