The Document Foundation (TDF) officially released LibreOffice 26.8 this Wednesday, August 26th. This new edition of the free and open-source office suite introduces several updates to tools such as Writer (word processor) and Calc (spreadsheet editor), as well as minor adjustments to an optional interface feature.

In Writer, LibreOffice's most used tool, a more effective algorithm has been implemented to distribute space between words in justified texts. This helps prevent certain lines from becoming excessively dense while others remain too spaced out. Additionally, the editor now automatically recognizes paragraph direction when opening or pasting texts, which facilitates work with right-to-left languages.

Other notable features in Writer include native support for OpenType variable fonts. This feature allows modifying parameters such as weight, width, and style within a specific font, eliminating the need to rely on separate files for each variation. In the spreadsheet editor Calc, the Shuffle command has been added, which completely randomizes the order of cells within a selected range.

Calc has also gained the ability to incorporate calculated fields into pivot tables. This allows the user to apply custom calculations directly within the pivot table, using existing fields in it as a basis. Furthermore, the new version improves the handling of line breaks in cells that reference XLSX (Excel) files. TDF maintains its commitment to improving the compatibility of Microsoft Office files with LibreOffice, within what is possible.

TDF also voiced recent criticisms of the competitor Office's Ribbon panel, arguing that Microsoft makes a mistake by presenting this type of unified interface to all types of users. In response, LibreOffice has always offered a tab-based interface, which resembles the Ribbon approach, but this option is configurable. In LibreOffice 26.8, this interface has been maintained, receiving small refinements, such as the ability to apply a light color background to this panel, where the color can be customized.

To activate the Tabbed interface in any LibreOffice tool, the user must go to View / User Interface / Toolbar and select 'Tabbed', defining whether the change will affect only the application in use or all applications in the suite. It is important to note that TDF made it clear that LibreOffice does not include an artificial intelligence assistant.
