How to turn old brooms into homemade plant supports

Old broom handles might seem useless and ready for disposal, but Dr. Mina Singh has found a simple way to give them a second life in the garden. This gardening enthusiast, who runs the Instagram channel gardening_ka_keeda, regularly shares useful tips and tricks for growing plants, and this DIY support is one of her helpful ideas.

Instead of throwing away used broom handles, she suggests taking them apart and using the bamboo sticks as supports for climbing plants.

Simple Support

To create this structure, you first need to remove the lower bristles from the old broom. This will leave about four to five bamboo sticks that can be used for the project. If you have two discarded brooms, this will be enough to make a larger support.

Singh arranges the bamboo sticks into square shapes, stacking them on top of each other to form a frame. She then ties the sticks together at the joints with wire. Rope can also be used instead of wire, and the sticks can be arranged in various shapes depending on the available space and the type of climbing plant.

After securing the frame, it can be placed in a pot or a garden bed to give climbing plants something to hold onto as they grow. In her demonstration, she uses this support for cypress grapes. After about 45 days, the plant had grown well around the structure, and the bamboo frame helped it climb instead of spreading across the ground.

Singh notes that this idea originally came to her from her mother, Ushi Singhgal, whom she saw using a similar technique. She later reproduced this idea in her own way. Thus, what would otherwise end up in the trash can can become a useful garden aid, proving that a little creativity can turn everyday waste into something practical for your plants.
