Although the rainy season brings relief due to precipitation, after the rain stops, the humidity level in the air significantly increases. In small rented spaces, such high humidity and stuffiness can be a problem, as even a running fan may just circulate hot air. Since not everyone can afford to install an air conditioner, and using a cooler only intensifies the feeling of dampness, there are smart and simple cooling methods that can help make the room comfortable naturally, without increasing electricity bills.
These folk remedies aim to improve air circulation and allow for natural cooling without air conditioning.
It is important to use cross-ventilation correctly: during times of intense heat and high outdoor humidity during the day, windows should be kept closed and curtains tightly drawn. However, in the evening or at night, when the outside air becomes cooler, it is necessary to open windows and doors opposite each other to expel the warm air accumulated inside the room.
To remove moist air from a small room, it is recommended to turn on extractor fans in the bathroom or kitchen. This will help draw out and remove hot and humid air, maintaining a constant flow of fresh air.
Attention should also be paid to bedding and lighting. During the rainy season, only light cotton sheets should be used, as synthetic fabrics retain heat. Furthermore, instead of incandescent or heat-emitting lamps, it is better to use LED or CFL lamps, and to switch off unnecessary electronics.
There is a trick with a wet cotton towel: instead of heavy sun protection curtains, a light cotton cloth soaked in water and wrung out can be hung. When air passes through this damp fabric outside, naturally cool air enters the room.
Another effective method is using ice with a desk fan. Place ice cubes in a large bowl or tray directly in front of a floor or desk fan. The air passing past the ice will instantly cool down, creating an effect similar to that of an air conditioner.
