Amid ongoing discussions regarding the formats of domestic cricket in South Africa, DP World Lions bowling coach Hashim Amla expressed high praise for the existing structure that has contributed to his team's significant success in recent seasons.
In an exclusive interview with IOL, when asked how much responsibility the Lions bear for the development system of top South African players, Amla remained reserved. He stated that he does not have information on financial performance but emphasized that DP World Lions is a very good franchise. He noted that many of the team's players subsequently gained opportunities to represent South Africa, the SA 'A' team, and the SA Emerging team.
The current champions of the 4-Day Series Division 1 continue to produce high-level players. In recent seasons, rising stars such as Kwena Maphaka, Nkaba Pieter, and Connor Esterhuizen have received invitations to national squads.
Amla shared that one of the most pleasing aspects for the coaching staff was watching many of their players demonstrate growth. He acknowledged that it is a double-edged sword, as the constant loss of key players to national teams leads to frequent squad changes. Nevertheless, he added that the team produces quality cricketers who bring real value to the country.
Hashim Amla, who himself played for South Africa in 349 international matches across all three formats, remains extremely optimistic about the cricketing future of the nation. He is convinced that there is a huge pool of talent in South Africa, and the system ensures the influx of talented players into every province. Amla noted that young athletes who inspire admiration appear in the Lions annually, and as a coach, he finds immense inspiration in observing the development of such talents.
