PayPal conducts mass layoffs among Indian employees as part of global restructuring

The digital payment platform PayPal has carried out large-scale workforce reductions in India. According to media reports, the company laid off about 10 percent of its Indian staff, which amounts to approximately 600 people. These actions come amid PayPal's global reorganization, which involves similar cuts in other countries.

PayPal issued clarifications, specifying that only 220 employees (about 4 percent) in India were affected by these changes as of August 31, 2026. A PayPal representative stated that the recent adjustments are part of a multi-year strategy aimed at streamlining global operations, accelerating work, and preparing the company for long-term growth. The company emphasized that it understands the impact of these decisions on employees and is ready to provide them support during this difficult time.

According to Moneycontrol, the layoffs were implemented across various teams, including technology, engineering, operations, payments, and finance, at PayPal offices located in Chennai, Bangalore, and Hyderabad. Previously, PayPal employed over 6,000 staff in India. However, one business report claims that up to 25 percent of all Indian personnel (around 1,500 people) may be affected by the completion of the reorganization process.

Reports from laid-off employees indicate that the company made the termination decision suddenly, via a phone call, without any prior warning or notification. One affected individual recounted being called during a Monday morning meeting (August 31) involving employees from various offices across the country, where he was directly informed of his dismissal. Immediately after the call ended, all his system accesses were blocked.

This employee added that afterward, he only received an email regarding the exit procedure. He was promised severance pay in the form of job placement assistance and one month's salary, but a clear answer regarding the final settlement has not yet been received.

Another employee reported receiving a direct email notification of termination on August 31.

The reduction in India is part of PayPal's global reorganization policy. Reports from earlier this year indicated that PayPal developed a multi-year program planning to reduce up to 20 percent of its global workforce. As of December 31, 2025, PayPal had approximately 23,800 employees worldwide, implying a potential reduction of around 4,760 jobs. PayPal is conducting these reductions in phases, starting with the Asia-Pacific region (which includes India), followed by meetings with affected employees in the US, Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. In Ireland, about 164 employees (12% of the total in the country) were laid off on the same day, and in Israel, the company cut 25 percent of its staff (about 70 people).

The company stated in May this year that its goal is to achieve savings of at least $1.5 billion in gross annual revenue through this reorganization.

Mass layoffs are occurring not only at PayPal but also at several other major technology companies globally. Uber announced a reduction of 3,300 jobs worldwide to invest freed-up funds in new technologies such as autonomous vehicles. Furthermore, Oracle is preparing to lay off about 10,000 employees, having already cut 32,000 people earlier this year. According to layoffs.fyi, in the global tech sector alone, more than 128,000 jobs were lost this year, exceeding the figure from the entire previous year (about 122,000).
