International pianist Samir Douki, who was born in Durban, will return to the city to perform a concert on Sunday morning. The performance will take place at St Cyprian's Anglican Church in Glenwood at 11:00 AM.
The concert is titled 'An Exploration of Classical and Contemporary Music from Beethoven to Bohemian Rhapsody.' The program is extensive and diverse, including works by Brahms, Chopin (Nocturnes and Etudes), Prokofiev, as well as themes from the films 'Phantom of the Opera' and 'Jurassic Park.' Additionally, a pop medley featuring Elton John, Queen, Billy Joel, and Michael Jackson will be performed, along with an improvisational fantasy and 'Bohemian Rhapsody.'
Douki completed his second year of study at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. Recently, he participated in performances of new and original music written by contemporary composers. He also had the opportunity to record several ensemble pieces by composers at the college and premiered a new Piano Concerto during the Atmospheres festival in Cardiff.
He is currently studying improvisation and jazz and attending jazz lessons. Furthermore, he worked as a tutor and assistant musical director, ranging from accompanying vocalists to participating in vocal language classes at the college for the opera 'Il mezzo per l'opera' by Monteverdi. This opera will be shown in Cardiff and Bristol.
He is currently preparing Beethoven's Fifth Piano Concerto for a college competition and is also working on other ensemble projects as part of his third year of study in Cardiff. The concert will be held at St Cyprian's Church at 603 Umbilo Road. Parking is free and guarded. Ticket prices at the entrance are 120 or 100 Rand.
