Premier Fishing Group has begun implementing an ambitious acquisition strategy in the South African fishing and aquaculture sectors. This initiative is supported by Sekunjalo, which is prepared to allocate up to 1 billion rand over the next 18 months.
The goal of this activity is to accelerate the company's growth, strengthen its position as one of South Africa's leading fishing firms, and establish a vertically integrated champion in the fishing and aquaculture sector on the African continent.
Sekunjalo Group plans to allocate approximately 250 million rand per deal over eighteen months. This strategy is backed by capital of up to 1 billion rand designated for financing strategic purchases in the largest segments of the fishing industry.
The acquisition strategy is viewed as a long-term project aimed at value creation and growth, intended to strengthen the resilience of the local industry, ensure the preservation and increase of jobs, and promote broader participation of the black population.
Expanding Scale, Capabilities, and Reach Across Africa
Premier Fishing Group aims to acquire complementary businesses and assets to increase scale, improve market access, and enhance operational efficiency. Key areas of interest include fishing rights, harvesting and processing capacity, logistics capabilities, aquaculture operations, and export platforms.
Key Sectors
The company focuses on sectors such as Southern Coast scallop, Western Coast scallop, pelagic species, and cod.
Regional Expansion
There are opportunities for expansion across the entire African continent, with particular attention to established and growing markets such as Morocco and Namibia.
Sekunjalo Group supports the management strategy to consolidate strategically aligned, Black-owned fishing enterprises in South Africa while expanding into key African markets.
Established Track Record and Industry Scale
Premier Fishing and Brands, founded in 1952, has grown into one of South Africa's largest fishing companies, entirely owned and managed by the Black community. The company operates independently in the fishing and aquaculture sector and has no corporate affiliation with Premier Foods.
Currently, the Group holds medium- and long-term rights in a portfolio that includes scallops, small pelagic species, cod, and squid, and also runs a business in sea urchin farming and invests in organic agriculture.
Southern Coast Scallop
Premier is one of the largest rights holders, holding a Total Allowable Catch (TAC) quota of 35.5%.
Western Coast Scallop
The company possesses significant capabilities in harvesting, processing, and international marketing.
Pelagic Sector
It ranks third among rights holders, holding a share in anchovies and sardines through a processing and marketing partnership with Pioneer Fishing.
As a major exporter, Premier links South African production to global markets. Furthermore, the company is a major employer in coastal communities, supporting tens of thousands of dependents through its wider value chain.
Driving Transformation and Job Creation
By investing hundreds of millions of rand in advanced aquaculture and infrastructure, Premier seeks to leverage this base to enhance supply chain resilience and achieve economies of scale. A central element of the acquisition program is engagement with Black-owned enterprises and strategic partners to increase ownership, participation, and management in the industry.
The ultimate goal of the Group is to make Premier Fishing Group the largest fishing company in South Africa and a competitive champion nationally and regionally in Africa, creating sustainable value while expanding employment opportunities.
Investors and strategic partners interested in participating in the group's growth strategy are invited to contact Arthur Johnson or Sean Naidu in the Sekunjalo Group Corporate Finance Department.
